Windows Explorer large and extra large icons all missing.

    Hi guys,

Got a weird issue with a friends computer. A few weeks ago she said that all the icons disappeared so I jumped on teamviewer to check it out and found that in Windows Explorer, viewing large or extra large icons shows the icons as totally blank (all file types and folders). When viewing medium size or smaller the icons all show just fine.

It doesn't matter which folder it is, I have even created a new folder just in C:\, copied a file to it and viewed it as large/extra large which didn't show the icons again. The desktop shows no icon pictures as well if large/extra large icons is selected.

I've installed the latest display driver and cleared the thumbnail cache with disk cleanup however still no luck at all. I've attached screenshots showing the issue. When I choose medium icons and then change it to large/extra large icons, it stretches the medium size ones so it distorts.. then if I press F5 to refresh, the icons turn blank. It's frustrating because the latest system restore is after the problem occurred, so I can't restore back.

Scaled up icons when changing from medium to large or extra large.

    Medium icons appear all fine.

After refreshing with F5, the icons are all blank when viewing as large/extra large.

    Hi, welcome to tenforums.

There are plenty of threads about blank icons occurring- feel free to research these. I've not come across one like your first though.

You could try creating a new user for test purposes and see if the same happens when logged in as that user. If not, it's specific to this user profile. If it does, it's a general system or configuration issue.

Check what program is associated with those extensions.

    Hi Dalchina,

Yeah I had a search in the forums and tried everything that the other users had suggested. I just created a test account and signed in as it however unfortunately it's still not showing the icons properly.

Try associating the affected file types with a different viewer.

If no change, perhaps an in-place upgrade repair install which keeps all programs, data and most settings could help.

If so, you need an iso of the same build as the installed Windows.
Isos can be downloaded using tool here:

Noted you said initially you'd tried clearing the icon cache.

I'm doubting that this method would work, but you can still try it.

    Do Option 1.
