File Explorer sort by date not accurate

To my knowledge the SORT BY DATE order goes off the last Saved Date not the Created Date but for the life of me I've been getting things showing up in the wrong order occasionally and it's started effecting a syncing program that I use. My clock is set correctly and when I go to file and properties of the file the dates are correct in there. Is there another place that Microsoft stores the time files?

You may be experiencing the natural versus the numerical sort order gotcha.

    This is what you expect:
    Ie4_01
    Ie4_128
    Ie401sp2
    Ie5
    Ie501sp2
    Ie6

    This is what you see:
    Ie4_01
    Ie4_128
    Ie5
    Ie6
    Ie401sp2
    Ie501sp2

If you have Win 10 Pro you can use gpedit.msc.

Under User Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, Windows Components, File Explorer

Enable Turn off numerical sorting in Windows Explorer.

This worked in Windows 7, not sure if it still works in Windows 10.
If you don't have Pro, there should be an way to accomplish this in the registry, but I don't know what it is. Maybe @Brink does?

Thanks for the responses but I guess my question is different

I want to sort my files by Date Descending so the file name shouldn't matter. Here is a screenshot of File Explorer, how does windows get the Generic DATE column and why does that differ from DATE SAVED column? I always assumed they were the same. And thank you for all of your help!

Um, there is no Date Saved column. There is a Date Created and a Date Modified. In the picture you posted, they are all the same so not an example of dates being different.

On my system, for jpg files, the Date column is the date the picture was taken. If you look at the Properties of the file, Details tab you can see that.

So maybe it's just picture formats?

Ztrucker thanks for sharing, I do have one file, the last one in my picture with a different DATE and DATE MODIFIED, it is a PNG file but just one I created in photoshop not anything I took with a camera. I think I've seen PDF files act this same way. It still seems like something that just recently changed in my Windows life since I've been using File Explorer for decades and Resilio Sync for years and haven't noticed these issues. But I'll dig into the meta data of the files more if I see this happening. Thanks
