    Hi Mothie.

    Short answer... I doubt it.

I see you have some specific gaming gear and most games are built for the big markets. Not saying your games won't work but you would have to check specifics. Same with specialized software, where are the sales (money).

There are some pretty neat Linux distro's out there from what I hear. When I need one I just use Ubuntu. Browsing and and office suites are no issue.

As to the other programs on device we don't know what you are running.

Not sure what trigger your post but I'll bet V1809. Installing it in the very first wave is a high risk move, regardless of Insider testing.

We've seen this show many times. You have Pro so you can and should delay these types of updates. I don't update my daily drive until I know dust as settled. Really I don't think MS is any worst than the rest. Apple usually launches fixes within weeks of their big updates. Frankly the world of hardware and software is far to complex for MS to test with any certainty and the fact that they let us run on eleven year gear just adds to the noise.

If 1809 is at the root I would recommend you fallback and block Feature updates. Three months from now it will be smoother.

I just a warning about the Integrated Intel graphics driver needing to be updated before the the upgrade. Next week when 1809 hits general distribution expect the volume to go to 12.

    Many thanks Ken.

No it was not connected to update 1809. God forbid.

Microsoft have a total monopoly, do they not?

Well maybe not a total monolopy, they sure have us by the .....

Apple is pushing hard, Linux has always been around ( if demand increases so will product availability) and Chromebooks are becoming something to be watched.

With MS share of OS's being north of 75% it is going to take a real bobo to have people running to the hills.

Bet if they ever tried making Windows a subscription with any kind of teeth, say $10 / month, the other vendors would be drooling.

According to Statista, global desktop share for Windows in July 2018 was 82.88%. According to Statcounter, as of Sept 2018, including all Windows versions, it was 99.37%. Doesn't matter who you believe, there's no denying that MS holds the vast majority of desktops (somewhere from just north of 8 in 10 to just south of 10 in 10). Learning to live with it is what it's all about, and why we're all here at TenForums (including me).

I'm not defending MS and I think they could to a better job if they weren't chasing dollars. That said I'm an investor and I want stock growth. Sell baby sell.

I can't think of another product in any field that is as accommodating as Windows. Seriously, there are thousands if not millions of pieces of hardware and software out there that can be cobbled together.

Apple use to laugh about Windows updates. They had a couple of devices out and a phone. Now that they are are the yearly introduction of hardware, with all the stuff you can add, guess who is having issues with releases.

Again I think MS could do better, a lot better but there would be cost. Cut off the old gear, establish a stated software test environment and rethink Feature builds every six months.

Incidentally I did some research a couple of days ago, but it is a monopoly indeed.

There are two alternatives, Apple and "Linux", and can you use them it mostly depends on what you have or want to do with your system.

Apple, never used and in my opinion is to expensive.
Linux/Ubuntu can be a solid alternative if you are not required to use software that is not supported, usually desktop are very well supported in Ubuntu, laptops with n vidia may have some troubles.

    HTH.

Short answer NO. I've heard Linux with WINE can run some Window software. Haven't tried it myself. I'm doubtful it will meet any bodies full needs, just my gut feeling.
I've used Linux on my Raspberry Pi's. Takes some getting used to, things are done differently etc. I don't ever compare it to Windows, apples and oranges IMHO. < for what I do with it and how I use it. The Raspberry Pi is a bit of a special case scenario. SBC and all that.
Windows is a bit of a first come first served. It got market share and basically kept it. It is or was where the money was. As far as games and software go. IMHO anyway as I see it.

Been there done it, Wine will run stuff however not recent programs and needs a lot of fiddling to get some things to work, not worth the effort, easier to just dual boot or use separate PC's or In my case ancient core duo laptop running Mint Linux. Very useful for use when I'm not at home and I don't need a magnifying glass to read the screen.

Problem with Linux is there are too many distros nowadays with too many developers all doing their own twist on it, almost as many updates on some distros as there is with Windows these days.

Was OK when there was just half a dozen of them.

Just a note, The October 2018 update has been pulled. All you can get again is the April 2018 update. Happened some time this afternoon. No announcement from Microsoft but you can't get the 17763 / 1809 update anywhere now.
