How to set GBP symbol when using australian keyboard?

Laptop purchased in Australia, hence has a $ sign on keyboard.

If I change the settings to UK input layout so I can have the pound symbol, it switches some of the keys, so I don't want to do this.

I've tried to "Change How Currency is Displayed" but this still results in a $ sign being produced.

Any ideas so I can have Australian keyboard layout, but change the currency symbol outputted?

    Thanks

    Alternatively Alt + 0163 = £

You could use SharpKeys to redefine the key you want to use for £.

Alternatively, if you are always going to be in the UK you could change the keyboard input layout to UK then put some small stickers on the keys that no longer match their markings [you can buy complete sets of these but on the computer I did it on about six months ago I used small bits of insulating tape instead].

Apologies for delayed response and thanks for both of your replies.

Can't use Alt 0163 as laptop keyboard so no number pad keys (doesn't work with top row numbers).

I tried Sharpkeys however as the £ symbol isn't already present on the keyboard, it won't let me map to it.

I also tried this however whilst it allowed me to enter GBP symbol via AltGr + Shift + 4, it wouldn't let me use a load of other keys among other issues. So caused more issues than it solved. May work for others though.

Temporary solution I've settled on (until Microsoft fixes this/provides a better solution) is to flick between US QWERTY (which is the actual physical keyboard layout) keyboard, and UK QWERTY using Win Key + Space Bar. A bit tedious but the best I've been able to come up with.

    Hope this helps someone else.

Yes, for entering Alt codes you must use a numeric keypad.

However, A laptop keyboard without a separate numeric keypad can switch the functions of a set of keys on the main keyboard to act as a numeric keypad. This happens when the function (Fn) key is pressed and held. The alternative function is usually shown on each key in the same colour (often blue) as the Fn key.

To enter Alt 0163 on such a keyboard, press and hold both the Fn + Alt keys, then type mjol (these are the keys temporarily behaving as 0163 on your numeric keypad while you press Fn).

If you want to use the numeric keypad for an extended length of time, you can press Fn and Numlock to switch to the numeric keypad, then Fn Numlock again to switch back to normal.

    Microsoft said:
You can press and hold Fn while pressing keyboard letters M, J, K, L, U, I, O, P, /, ;, and 0 to match the physical layout of a numeric keypad.

If you declare the keyboard to Windows as a UK layout then you will get £ by pressing Shift 3 whatever the key actually has marked on it. Similarly, you will get € by pressing AltGr 4 {AltGr means the right-hand Alt key}.

I just stuck labels on the keys concerned so I could see what they were really producing. The ones I found to be different in comparison to a US keyboard were
That weird triple key just by the top-left corner
    Shift 2
    Shift 3
    AltGr 4
    Shift '
    \
    Shift \
    #
    Shift #

You have access to the complete set of Characters in your relevant Character set [Ansi, Ascii, Etc] by use of the Alt [actually you should always use the Left Alt to access the codes and enter codes on the numeric keypad]

The code for £ is hold down the Left Alt and use the Numeric Pad to type 0163 on a Laptop with an embedded keypad you would have to add the function key that switches to the embedded keypad - [awkward but doable with a little practice]

Other codes for special characters may be found in various lists online ....

You can also find the codes, [and also insert them] using the Windows Character Map Applet which lists all the available characters in all the available Code Pages [A code page is a complete set of characters, and can allow you to type Cyrillic, Japanese, Chinese, and other alphabets on any keyboard]

There's also "read the previous posts before suggesting a solution that will not work, as has already been discussed".

    @margrave55

Thank you for trying to draw our attention to the fact that the discussion seems to be veering away from addressing the OP's problem.

Whilst not confirmed anywhere that I have found, it is my understanding that
1 only keyboards with keys marked as having an Fn alternative [such as K also being marked with a blue 2] have those alternatives implemented - therefore, no marking means no use for alt codes [unless there is a numeric keypad], and
2 the OP's last response does imply that there are no such markings on the keyboard in question.
