Battery Backup For Laptop When Power Outage?

Hey all. I might get a UPS to get more battery backup. Thoughts on that?


Right now i just have that one PW7015L.


If i get a UPS, does that UPS have to connect to a surge protector? Or can you connect that to a wall outlet? I have one outlet where i connect a surge protector to it and basically connect everything to it... my laptop, my 2 monitors, my laptop battery charger and modem etc.


Also does anyone know if a Smaller dell powerbank would work like this?

Its pw7015m and has 12000mah. It shows 43wh.


I read online that some people mentioned that this would not work if you are charging your xps 9550 while using it at full tilt. Full tilt means using it at high cpu percentage. Does anyone have a clue about this? I saw this on ebay as well and the price seems cheap.


I was thinking that hey... if i get 3 of these... its cheaper than getting another 2 of the pw7015l which i currently have 1 since 3 of the pw7015m would be 12000mah x 3 = 36000 mah... vs 18000 x 2 = 36000 mah of the pw7015l. Or does it not work that way because thats only 43wh compared to the other one which is 65wh and it isn't strong enough?


Does that mean the pw7015m would not charge if im using it at high cpu capacity? Also the pw7015L when i charge it when my laptop is 10%, it would charge about 1h45m then it goes out. My laptop has max 70% at the most. So does that mean if the pw7015m works, it probably give me 1/3rd the time less as its 12000mah? Or is that not how it works?


Right now, i want to add an additional 6 hours of battery on my laptop. At the moment, my laptop gives me 1h15m max when using it at the lowest battery setting and me using lower brightness. Then when connecting the powerbank, it charges 1h45m while im using laptop while it runs out. Then i have maybe 45m on my laptop battery before it goes out. So basically i get a total of 3h45m in total with my laptop battery and the dell pw 7015l powerbank.

What would be my best option to get another 6 hours of battery backup? If i get 2 more of the pw7015L, it would be about 2h45m each so 5h30m total which is pretty good. What if i get a 1500V 900W UPS? In terms of price, getting 2 powerbanks would be cheaper than getting 2 UPS? Would a UPS give my laptop more battery backup than these powerbanks?


I can't get this because i'm not in the US and where i buy it now would cost close to 2x the price. But does anyone have a clue how much battery backup i would get with this?


Example laptop is at 10%, i connect my xps 9550 to this UPS. Then i use it while its charging. Would it fully charge my laptop to 100% while im using it before the power in the UPS goes out? I will only be connecting my laptop to it... nothing more. My pw7015L charges 1h45m before it runs out and gives my laptop 70% at the absolute max. Is there a way to know about this for the UPS?


Also i know ppl say you are suppose to have UPS connected at all times. But for me, i dont want to do this. I only to use it when there is no power etc. So would that be fine?

Actually --Don't laugh at this -- but why not use a Car 12V battery with a DC inverter to 220V / 110 V AC - that will keep the laptop powered for Hours and the Car battery is easy to re-charge -- probably a lot cheaper too than some of those UPS things which IMO would be overkill for a domestic situation.

Think Old fashioned Engineering solutions for these types of problems !!

I'm in a small studio apartment. I can't put generator or anything like that because i'm not outside.


Also i read that where im located, there will be some outages because of the hot weather. Thus i want to be prepared if it does happen if im on the computer. Thus my option seem to be only more powerbanks... or UPS.

Hi there

You don't have to have a car to buy a car battery -- If the power fails you've enough time to connect the computer to INVERTER and car battery and it's far cheaper and will last you far longer than any other sensible power backup system.

Amazon will deliver one if you are worried about getting that heavy battery home without any transport. Typical size of a car battery is quite small -- no problem in a studio apartment and the inverter size is smaller than a typical 3.5 inch HDD so no probs with space,

Of course you could also buy one of those tiny Nuclear power options of the sort that powered the voyager spacecraft -- still operational since 1977 !!!!

1. So you can leave it inside apartment without any issues?


2. So if i use it and say i use it, how long could i get out of it? Example if i use it for 3 hours, how long more hours would i get the next time i use it?

Okay so looks like im going to get a UPS then.

Also i know you have to charge the UPS to 100%. So when i do this, do i need to leave the UPS plugged into wall outlet or power surge? Because I don't think this is necessary and this would drive up the electricity bill for no reason? Thus could i charge it to 100%. Then leave it under my desk not connected to anything... then if outage happens, connect my laptop to it? Then use it until it runs out of power? Is that the correct way to do it? Now is there difference compared to outage happens, i then use my laptop on battery till its 10% then plug it into UPS and use it while it charges? Then keep it charging while doing my thing until it goes out?

Also is there a big difference if i get the 1350VA/815W vs the 1500VA/900W? That is what im looking at here. Could i get 3 hours on it?



Also what confuses me is i read that you are suppose to replace the batteries every so often. How often is this? So if i only use it when necessary, i rarely will need to replace it for a long time? But each time i will use it, i would be draining it right? Since i would be using it till it runs out of power? I read this is called draining and makes the battery go bad faster? What exactly is the difference between that and connecting to your other electronics for many hours and then it finally going out? Is that the same thing? Is there a difference if i use it while using my laptop intensively compared to someone
connecting it to monitors, desktop, laptop and letting it connected till it runs out of power?



In terms of price, is it cheaper/better to get a UPS vs another dell power companion? The UPS would cost me roughly $200 more or less and the dell power companion about $125 more or less. But i know the power companion will give me another 2h30m. So in terms of price, the power companion is cheaper option? But the UPS is better because i can connect my modem/router and even a monitor if i choose to right?


Would it make sense to have say 3 power companions or say 2 power companion and 1 UPS? Or maybe get 2 UPS? Or is that too much?
