SOLVED-Programs can't write to Documents folder - Permissions problem?

I can't put my finger on what triggered this, but I get an error message whenever a recently installed program tries to write to my Documents folder or Desktop folder (built-in Windows programs and other programs that I installed many months ago do not have this problem).

Wording is different depending on what program, but the gist of it seems to be lack of permission. My account is Administrator. I have no problems in my Documents folder when accessing folder directly through Explorer. I haven't tested every possible folder/program, but did confirm that Handbrake is unable to write to Documents but is able to write to C:/. I seem to not get the error message if I run programs as Administrator.

"Security" tab of "Properties" for folder C:\Users\Me shows that my account has full access.

    Any suggestions?

Hi, not heard of anything like this so far..

Wording is different depending on what program, but the gist of it seems to be lack of permission.
Could you please quote the full text of 2 or 3 examples exactly, and the program which generated them?
(The text rather than a screenshot helps - I find a screenshot reader prog helpful here to do OCR if necessary)

Have you ever changed your library folder location?

Please post a screenshot of the security tab for Documents and Desktop.

    Thanks

Is it possible that controlled access was enabled by accident?

Yes, that's it; thanks so much, Ken! I don't know, I may have even enabled that intentionally not knowing that it would have this effect. I've turned it off for now, but maybe will re-enable it later and whitelist programs that it messes up. Quite a relief to have this fixed

It's actually quite a neat function especially to keep Ransomware out.

Since it's first introduction it has become easier to use. If you scan down to the end of thread, say last two pages it has some interesting info and with 1809 just around the corner it may become very practical.

I think the only AV product on the market that has this functionality is Bitdefender.

I make backups with a purchased copy of Macrium Reflect. This locks the backups so supposedly ransomware can't alter.

I would also recommend you look at the free version of Macrium. This allows you to restore your system to a point in time where you know it was working.

    Glad the forum could help.

Well spotted- I don't use Defender so haven't run into that. Must remember that one.
