What I suggested allow you to go to file explorer, click on a file or folder, it is password protected AND you do not need to use external tools that I consider adding another layer of complexity and I still believe is the best solution IMH, that you do not what to use an external drive was not clear to me.
Of course the last choice is yours![]()
But thank you very much for trying to answer my request, I just found it kind of odd because it would be like me saying I'd like advice on buying a car but I don't want to buy a Ford, then somebody suggested I buy a Ford and tell me it's the best for me.
It's all good though I appreciate your input. If I was wanting to secure it on a thumb drive all my thumb drives come with encrypted software on them and I can do that but that would be very inconvenient to have to go get the thumb drive every time I want to access a file or it folder that I use quite often. That is why I was looking for a different way than the way you suggested, I hope that makes sense
No you can't do that at all. Bitlocker provides no such functionality. It can encrypt a volume or not.
I've been thinking (idly) about this question all day and hoping to come up with something better than "you can't".
I failed.
I think the OP has to realise you can't always do what you want even if it is bleeding obvious that 9% of people may want to.
You can hide files (set as hidden or system) so people will not see them. This is useless as (a) you'll forget, and (b) they aren't protected in any way whatsoever. You could make all users on your PC standard users so they couldn't change it back but it is frankly a terrible solution however you look at it.
Your next option is to encrypt with EFS which is build into Windows (tutorial below). This however is useless as it is unlocked automatically when you sign on. It might have some marginal use case if your husband had a separate account but you didn't want her to see your secret directory - it would stop that. Basically though it is pointless.
Then there is a situation you encrypt a whole volume (be it a disk or partion) but OP says they don't want that. Fair enough and it probably wouldn't help anyway - once it is unlocked it is unlocked.
Next you have the situation where you are signed on but you want some specific directory to be encrypted and password protected. Here I'm afraid you are in the third party realm. You can use VeraCrypt, you can use 7-zip or you could make some virtual hard drive encrypted with (if you want) bitlocker. None of it is seamless at all.
What I do is encrypt everything and shut-down when I'm not using the PC.
Not an answer, but really, there isn't one.

There is/was a program from Everstrike Software called Protect Folder that would password protect and encrypt files, folders and entire USB drives.

I have no idea how strong the encryption was but it was fast and effective. I used it for years.
However, the product, which is still available, has not be ungraded since 2012 and support is nonexistent. (Support exists in theory, but I tried contacting the support team 3 times between 2013 and 2017 and never got a response.) As of June 2017 it successfully ran on Win10 but I suspect it will eventually fail so I got rid of it and switched to VeraCrypt.
