Hello, is the brightness function the only fn function that is not working or are none of the fn functions working?

Bellow is a list of methods that might work for you.

    • Did you enable the fn functions in the bios? (BIOS -> Advanced -> System configuration -> function buttons)
    • Did you install the Toshiba Function Key Utility driver from the Toshiba support website.

I had a bit of trouble with finding the support page for your Toshiba Satellite, I found the L850D-12P and the L850D-12Q but not the L850D-138.
You can also change the brightness by pressing the [Win] and [X] button and then selecting Mobility Center.

    It does.

I just have tried your methods, but they don't working.
In BIOS was setted "Special function mode". I've installed TFKU but the brightness has the same behaviour and in the Mobility Center I can move the cursor but is the same thing.

I see, let's continue with the troubleshooting, did the brightness control work at one point or did it never work for you?

    • Let's try adaptive brightness. (Configuration Screen -> System -> Power & Sleep -> Additional Power Settings -> Change advanced power settings -> Display -> Adaptive brightness -> Enable -> Reboot) You can also change the brightness there.
    • Make sure that you have the last available graphics driver installed that is listed on the drivers page for your specific Satellite notebook.
    • Microsoft happen to break the brightness control with updates in the past but also send out updates to solve it again, is your Satellite netbook up-to-date with the Microsoft Updates?

Good luck, I hope that any the above methods are helpful for you.

It was working good at one point, but after it goes crazy.

I've enabled "Adaptive brightness" but it still doesn't working
My Microsoft Updates and drivers are up-to-date.

Hi, just to see what happens, try installing this neat free program:
    Download Volume2 1.1.5.404 / 1.1.6.411 Beta

This can do a number of useful things, but the one I've highlighted is Win key + right and left arrows for brightness.
See if that at least gives you control.

If it works, you should get a horizontal blue rectangle with slider indicating the setting pop up when you press those key combinations.

It would help if you knew whether the brightness control worked e.g. until you received a particular feature update (upgrade) - Windows build, for example. Has it worked with Windows 10 installed? (Your laptop probably came with Win 8 I think)

@asimpleman, Your specs are for a laptop, not a desktop. I'll assume you have the L850D laptop and typed 'desktop' in error.

You probably can't turn off the WiFi with a Fn key, or adjust the volume either. I have a Toshiba L750. In order to enable the Fn keys on a Toshiba of this vintage you need to install a Toshiba utility, in my case called Flash Cards. For your L850D it is called the 'TOSHIBA Function Key Utility'. There are no Windows 10 versions for your model (or mine) but the Windows 8 (and the W7) utility works for me in Windows 10 version 1803.

Look up your model here on Toshiba's Romanian support site and download it from the Drivers tab.

While you're there you may also want to download the Sleep Utility. This is the only way on our Toshibas to turn on or off power to one of your USB ports when the PC is turned off, something I find useful for charging other devices from my PC. The Sleep and Charge port is indicated by a 'lightning' symbol next to the usb one.

Another utility I find useful is the Disk Creator. This can burn ISOs to a dvd, which is something you can already do in W10. But it can also create an ISO from a disk, which you can't do with the native W10 utilities.

Not all the OEM utilities are 'bloatware'. Some, like the three above are useful.

Please tell us what the issue was if the laptop got fixed, I'm curious in what it might be.
