    Keyboard Not Typing Correct Characters

My brother has an HP laptop (Model bs057cl) that he hasn't used in about a year. When he boots the computer he's unable to use the keyboard normally. We brought up the onscreen keyboard which, although it works, does not match the normal qwerty keyboard layout. In fact, the layout of the onscreen keyboard exactly matches the layout of the laptop's keyboard.
Keyboard Not Typing Correct Characters-keyboard.jpg I am at a loss. It's probably an incredibly easy fix, but one that I'm clueless about performing.

Hi boweasel, Have you tried the below tutorial by Brink, Option One, to add a keyboard.

Thanks, Ethel. I did try option 1, but his Settings screen didn't conform at all to Brink's tutorial. And when I tried to search for Region & Language I was stymied by the on-screen keyboard - it won't let me use the space bar. The PowerShell option was also rendered useless because of the space bar.

After your response I retried option 1 - this time searching for the word Language. From those results I was eventually able to get to the Add a Keyboard option. The default keyboard was the US Qwerty, but it also listed a secondary keyboard that was called Dvorak right hand keyboard. I was ready to dismiss this as unrelated, but something made me click on that secondary keyboard and delete it.

And that took care of his problem. Thanks for inspiring me to take a second look at that tutorial.
