    Stopping the New-And-Improved Cortana

    lain01 said:
    Hi

I've just installed windows 10 on my laptop. Initially a box on the left hand side telling me about Cortana kept popping up so I switched Cortana off. Now the box just keeps popping up constantly, asking me to start typing to search the web or for apps etc.
    .
I had the same problem and none of the suggestions worked so I came up with this solution: Use Safe Mode to allow you to rename the folder containing this malfunctioning application, "Cortana". I posted the solution. Now with a new Windows 10 update, THE PROBLEM HAS RETURNED AND MY PREVIOUS SOLUTION NO LONGER WORKS.

Now, a "Cortana" process prevents renaming the offending folder, and if you end the process, it comes back from the dead in a few seconds! (&^@! Microsoft!). So the revised solution times the rename within the few seconds it takes Windows to restart Cortana after you end the previous incarnation. The details:

    1. Click the Start button (lower left).
    2. Select "Power".
    3. Hold down the Shift key, and click "Restart".
    4. Select "Troubleshoot", then "Advanced Options", then "Startup Settings".
    5. Click "Restart".
    6. Press "4" to enable Safe Mode on the next startup.
    7. Restart and log in.
    8. Start Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\Windows\SystemApps
    9. Rename the folder with "Cortana" in the name. (The convention I use is to put an "x" before the original name, so it's obvious it's been renamed, and can be restored.) It will prompt you for the Administrator password. Then it will tell you it can't rename because another program is using the folder. There will be a "Retry" button. Just leave this dialog for now.
    10. Start Task Manager and end the "Cortana" task that's locking the folder. Then QUICKLY click the Retry button (in the previous dialog) to rename the folder. (You have to do this before Cortana restarts in a few seconds.)
    11. Restart normally. Cortana will never bother you again!

I just got my new Dell Inspirion laptop yesterday and the pop up just started this morning for me. I tried some off these options and then restarted. I'm now on the getting Windows ready screen. I can't seem to find the touch pad settings

I may have found a solution. Click the start button and select settings. Then select Devices. Click on Mouse and Touch Pad and scroll to the bottom and select "Additional Mouse Options." This brings up a box that should have the information and name of the type of touch pad your computer has. Mine says "Synaptics Touch Pad....". Click on settings and then in the new box that pops up you should see a tab that says "Tapping". Open that tab and you should then see "Three Finger Tap" and "Four Finger Tap". Uncheck those boxes and then click "Apply". That should take care of it. I'm no computer expert so I hope that's easy to follow. So far I've not had the box pop up anymore.

Apparently you can open the Search/Cortana box with a 3 finger click and my touch pad must have been getting confused.
You are a genius...Thankyou. Death to Cortana...

hi, i'm having this same issue, with the "how to get help in windows 10" tab keeping to pop up. but it comes up in Microsoft Edgte while im using Chrome. and when the tab does pop up, it changes my keyboard settings, and it makes it so my buttons do different actions. like the "h" key opens my screen broadcasting settings and "L" just resets the laptop. if anyone could help, i will appreciate it

    hi
not sure this will help but its worth a try.right click on the task bar. from the box that opens up select search, then from the next box select hidden. that gets rid of the search box but unsure if it will resolve your issue
Unfortunately this did not work for me. This issue only started for me after the recent Creators Update. After the update I noticed the search box had been replaced by a search icon. I use an external mouse on a laptop. When the start menu pops up while I am in the middle of a cut and paste for instance it is totally disruptive. If I am working on an audio file the audio will stop playing, YouTube will minimise etc. In short a total PITA. I wonder why I only had this issue now and some folk have had it from the get go?

    Pop Interval Is 60 Minutes

I've just noticed that the time interval for the search box popping up is exactly 60 minutes each time. Might this shed light on what might be causing the issue?

Could it be a sticky windows key?

or You could just remove cortana using registry entries

next time it pops up type regedit

    go into registry editor

    go to this entry

    Navigate to the followig key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Search

Now in the left pane, right-click on Windows Search key and select New > DWORD (32-it) Value. It will be formed in the left pane. Give this newly created DWORD value a name AllowCortana and set its value to 0 to disable the feature.

No more Cortana and Search box turns into Windows Search. :)
