Just signed up to add my experience. The above mentioned steps do work for me but only until the computer restarts or reboots. Any reset of the machine seems to restore the mouse settings back to default, even when using custom profiles through the mouse additional setting.

Really bloody annoying, hope this gets a fix soon!

    Solution

I found the solution to on my laptop! I'm using a dell laptop and my laptop has an application call Dell touch pad, so what I did is that I open it, went into the gesture menu, then I deselected the "right edge swipe" and it was resolved.

Found the Solution on HP laptops

The solution for HP laptops is not the three finger flick setting (which is actually what it says instead of click). I found out that the solution is actually on the same page as the other solution that didn't work for me. What I had to do was turn off my "tapping" setting. This got rid of any possibility of me three finger clicking, but it also got rid of my tap to click feature. So if you're willing to give up your tap to click to get rid of pesky Cortana, that's the way to do it. Hope this helps you guys that are having issues!

I may have found a solution. Click the start button and select settings. Then select Devices. Click on Mouse and Touch Pad and scroll to the bottom and select "Additional Mouse Options." This brings up a box that should have the information and name of the type of touch pad your computer has. Mine says "Synaptics Touch Pad....". Click on settings and then in the new box that pops up you should see a tab that says "Tapping". Open that tab and you should then see "Three Finger Tap" and "Four Finger Tap". Uncheck those boxes and then click "Apply". That should take care of it. I'm no computer expert so I hope that's easy to follow. So far I've not had the box pop up anymore.

Apparently you can open the Search/Cortana box with a 3 finger click and my touch pad must have been getting confused.
Thanks scd4f. Your fix worked for me. I also have a Synaptics Touch Pad.

Weirdly I only get this problem whilst using the Paint program - an important tool for me - I've tried all of the suggestions on this site & several others with no success.
I've even contacted Microbrains but have gotten only formula patronising suggestions.
I may go back to 7 rather than 8.1 - at least then I had no trouble with anything.

    THIS SOLVED MY PROBLEM!

Very much appreciated! It was so annoying as I use the trackpad to scroll up and down all the time; I'd looked in the mouse/trackpad area but hadn't seen this settings box.

Is this "problem" particular to HP laptops? I only experienced this on my work PC which is an HP; I also have an ASUS running Windows 10 and this never happens...

None of these help & god alone knows what I've turned off that I shouldn't have....
My only real problem with it popping up is when I'm using the Paint program, I use this A LOT, so it is becoming particularly annoying, it may mean dumping 10 in favour of 7 - let's face it 8.1 is just as bad.
