Even with ClearType off, Text in system apps is multi colored.

Hi. I'm struggling to remove that weird multi-colored text that, in the past, has been associated with sub-pixel anti-aliasing like Clear Type.

    Here's an example:
Even with ClearType off, Text in system apps is multi colored.-screenshot-150-.png

I've tried two things with no improvement:
    1) Turn off ClearType in the ClearType Text Tuner
    2) Turn off "Smooth edges of screen fonts" in the Performance Options control panel.

Where else can I go to turn this off? It looks like garbage!

This is on a LG 27UD69P-W, a 4K IPS panel. I've tried downloading their driver, but that didn't affect anything. I also turned off 150% (recommended) scaling. That didn't help either.

Good lord. After navigating layers of Windows 10 settings panels, veneered over Windows 7 control panels, veneered over god-knows-how-old property sheets, I finally turned it off in the registry using these instructions.

This whole Jenga pile is 10 years beyond needing to be completely replaced.

One last note. After nuking the registry keys, the Adjust Clear Type tool actually behaves like you think it should. Mainly, when clear type is off, it doesn't show any sample text boxes. (It oddly showed three ClearType samples, even with it off) When you turn it on, the sample text actually looks different, instead of multiple intensities of fringy mess.

If you then go through the process, ClearType looks like your average subpixel anti-aliased text.

    Hi,

If you're still paying any attention to this thread I would like to ask you a question. Have you managed to disable cleartype in all parts of windows? I have unchecked the 'smooth edges of screen fonts' option and changed the fontsmoothing registry keys which has disabled cleartype in some places (Office, browsers, Windows explorer) but some parts (the task bar, task manager, control panel, settings menus, right click menu and more) remain afflicted by cleartype. Did the method you mention get rid of cleartype in all these parts of windows?

    Thanks

What's funny is that since I wrote that, my Clear Type settings had reverted back to junk. Your post finally got me to flip it back.

The ClearType tool still doesn't work, so this time I used this tool to reset the keys to something resembling 'off'.

A reboot and a quick screen shot shows that although much of my 'older' text renders per-pixel, the Start menu, task bar and really most of the UI which was re-written during the Windows 8/10 timeframe, still draws with sub pixel antialiasing.

No doubt there are two text systems at play and lord knows they'd never do something as polished as making sure settings are respected in both stacks.

I wouldn't be surprised to hear they had 50 people on their text team, and yet in 2019, Windows text renders on a high-dpi display like you're looking through the bottom of a beer bottle. They just don't seem to care about this stuff.

Thanks for replying to my post. It seems your experience is the same as mine. I had been hoping it was just my installation that was faulty, but clearly not.

I initially thought, like you, that it was just the Windows 8 on 'metro' UI windows that were affected but it's even weirder than that. On my PC control panel still has cleartype on and that predates Windows 8. Also if I right click on the desktop the context menu has cleartype but if I right click in my browser it does not. Even stranger, Windows File Explorer does not have cleartype but if I right click in it, the context menu does! Nuts.

I've got one tweak left to try. I've read a couple of posts on the internet that claim that if you force Windows to use either a bit map (rather than truetype) font such as MS Sans Serif, or the Korean 'Dotum' font (seriously) cleartype is no longer applied in the areas that do not respect cleartype settings. I've been holding off from trying it because it's a fairly serious registry mod that could go wrong and break my installation but I'll just have to bite the bullet and give it a try
