Nope, here it is again and again. Is there no way of getting the "search the web and windows" box off my taskbar and stopping this infuriating thing?
This sounds like Virus activity, normally my search box does not pop up. And, after I originally used Cortana, it vanished.

Check your Startup Programs for anything that does not look like an actual Microsoft command line. also check tasks, many virii add tasks that mimic real MS features, I have seen the Security Center for Windows 7 mimicked perfectly.

This has been bothering me for a few days now I have literally spent hours trying to figure out how to stop this from popping up. I tried all of the suggestions listed above but to no avail. Finally today I think I found a way to stop it on my machine any way I hope this helps.

First: Click the windows button in the lower left corner and select settings.
Second: In setting select System>About which is located at the very bottom.
Third: In the about section scroll down and Additional administrative tools located under the Related Settings heading.
Fourth: When you select Administrative Tools in the box that pops up the first category should be Component Services select it.
Fifth: After selecting Component Services under the Console root select Services(local).
Sixth: Scroll down until until you find Windows Search and disable it!!!!!

I hope this makes sense and hopefully it will help someone. This is the only thing that has worked for me.
I'm going to try to insert a screen shot below of where I was able to disable the search.

I may have found a solution. Click the start button and select settings. Then select Devices. Click on Mouse and Touch Pad and scroll to the bottom and select "Additional Mouse Options." This brings up a box that should have the information and name of the type of touch pad your computer has. Mine says "Synaptics Touch Pad....". Click on settings and then in the new box that pops up you should see a tab that says "Tapping". Open that tab and you should then see "Three Finger Tap"
and "Four Finger Tap". Uncheck those boxes and then click "Apply". That should take care of it. I'm no computer expert so I hope that's easy to follow. So far I've not had the box pop up anymore.

Apparently you can open the Search/Cortana box with a 3 finger click and my touch pad must have been getting confused.

Hi! I went and registered in this forum specifically to thank you! the touchpad must have been registering a "four finger tap" for me. You are right, this type of tap seems to be associated by default with "launching the action center".

So apparently either the sensitivity of the touchpad on my HP Pavilion is wonky, or my fingers aren't as "delicate and ladylike" as they should be... LOL.

Thanks again, this was driving me nuts.

I think this is a touchpad update problem with Windows 10

This worked for me as well. I wonder if this problem is because Windows 10 updates reset the touchpad settings? I got rid of Cortana for almost a month only to have it come back recently, so I turned off these touchpad settings again.

Problem came back but have another solution!

So, like a few others, I found that turning off the 3/4 finger tapping stops the problem, but only until you restart the PC.

A few people mentioned that they also have Synaptics pointer so I thought - maybe Synaptics have a solution...

Download the new Windows 10 driver, and follow the instructions.

    So far this has worked...

    THIS SOLVED MY PROBLEM!

Very much appreciated! It was so annoying as I use the trackpad to scroll up and down all the time; I'd looked in the mouse/trackpad area but hadn't seen this settings box.

Is this "problem" particular to HP laptops? I only experienced this on my work PC which is an HP; I also have an ASUS running Windows 10 and this never happens...

The disabling of the 3/4 tapping works - until the next restart. Wish Microsoft or Synaptics would have an update that addressed this issue.

I've had problem with search poping up all the time. Tried reinstalling drivers etc (on fresh os). Last thing I tried is uninstalling the drivers and letting windows download them for me. Did this and it installed an older version of the driver. After a bit of thinkering I found that disabling three finger flick that would open task view disables it. Hope this helps :)

Many thanks for the perfect solution to this stupid annoyance! Your instructions were perfect - even though some things were slightly different the directions made it very easy to solve. Thank you :)
