'Restore Down' file icon upper right function?

    Hello,

I just purchased a new desktop Acer Aspire that has win10 home 64 on it that I have been setting up.
I've installed our copy of Office Professional Plus 2016 on it as well.

I also have a 2 year old Acer laptop that also has win10 home 64 and it has Office Professional Plus 2016 on it. Same version and build number.

The new desktop seems to be running well except for one thing.
On the desktop the window size icon, upper right of screen (looks like two file folders, and is between the - (minimize) and the x (close) icons) has a different function then what I'm used to.

On my old desktop and my current laptop, clicking that icon reduces the size of the current window allowing one to manipulate windows side-by-side and other configurations.

On my new desktop clicking that icon causes something that is apparently called 'Restore Down'. At least that is what it says when mousing over that icon. It opens a window about 2" wide by 3" tall and starts flashing what looks like a file list rapidly paging down or something. It will not allow me to expand that window to a larger size.

Note: this icon function is consistent across Outlook, File manager, Excel, Word, and Firefox. (didn't check the other office products)

    What is Restore Down?

How can I change the function of that icon back to what it used to do, reducing the size of the current window?

    Thanks

Hi Andy Griffith. Welcome to the TenForums @Andy Griffith

Any chance Tablet Mode is on. Click on the Notification Icon lower right to see the Action Center. Is the tablet mode (one of the squares) Blue. If so click on it to shut off.

Saw this on a couple of google searches.

Mine shows the same thing, means either Maximize [different from F11 Full Screen] or Restore Down, toggles back to previous size after Maximizing.

    Thanks for the replies.
Ken, tablet mode is not on. Didn't even know there was such a thing until you mentioned it.

Berton, Ok so that explains what restore down means when I mouse over it. I seemed to have fixed it but I don't understand why, which always a bit disturbing. I right clicked on that icon and I hit restore on the little pop up menu. After doing that it seems to be behaving normally. Meaning I click on the two window icon and it shrinks the current window some, and then can click again and it restores it to full screen.

Prior to this when I clicked on that icon it would open a small 2x3 window and whatever was in there was flashing rapidly. This little window would not maximize when I clicked the icon. The only way to get it to stop was to keep clicking on the icon and it would eventually go red and close that little 2x3 screen.

Not much I can do at this point but hope that previous behavior was some sort of fluke, and hope it doesn't happen in the future. I did reboot and make sure it still behaved correctly and it has done so.

Any other input please let me know?

Otherwise I will come back and mark this solved tomorrow.

Thanks for taking the time to help.
