Icons have black square on them as I mouse over

    I have an odd problem.

Desktop can look 100% fine, then as I move the mouse cursor over the icons, as I move the mouse over each one, they have a black square around them. It seems completely random when it does it.

Today it did it while installing a piece of software, then it had finished installing, the icons went back to normal.

Then a little later it happened again, no software being installed.

Very occasionally after this, the whole background pic turns to black.

Logging out and back in fixes it.

Paid for version of Malewarebytes gives a clean bill of health as does free Avast.

It's been doing this for a few weeks on and off. Yesterday evening I reformatted and reloaded Win 10. (well I reloaded from a trueimage disk image backup taken in May this year, then did win updates etc. has only been doing this for a couple of weeks or so)

Today it's still doing it. I just took a snip of part of the desktop after I moused over the icons,

    Spec as in my profile

edit: I just removed a USB drive and this is the result

I'll log out and back in and it will be fine, sometimes when I just do thinks like browse web, open software etc it sorts it's self out

    Any ideas?

    Many thanks

EDIT: It's about 30 mins later, now if I mouse over an icon, the background reappears as in this pic (haven't moused over them all). Only had Chrome open since I originally posted.

Has to be a video driver problem with your AMD RX480. Download and install the latest one available which appears to have been released today:
    Code:
    Windows 10 - 64-Bit Edition
    Adrenalin Edition 18.9.2 Optional
    File Size317 MB
    Release Date9/19/2018
I suggest completely uninstalling the display drivers using Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) from WagnardMobile: Official Download Here. Do this in Safe Mode. Then get the latest driver for your AMD RX480 card here: Download*

See if that gets rid of the problem.

Edit: Download the new driver before uninstalling the old one.

    Nope It's still doing it.

It seems to do it when say I'm removing or inserting a USB pen, or other things involving file creation.

Today, I created a new text document on the desktop, the second I clinked the mouse (right click/new/text document) the background turned black (on both my main and 2nd monitors). Right clicking and selecting refresh did nothing. So I tried creating another text file, this time the second I did so, the screens reverted to their normal background.

So I tried a few more times, first couple it was fine. Then the next one icons background turned black moving mouse cursor over them, then created another one,, all back to normal. Then tried creating another, the background on the 2nd monitor went black, the main remained normal but mousing over icons turned them black, this time right clicking and selecting refresh turned my main monitors background black, but my 2nd monitors background back to what it should be. Right clicking and clicking refresh a second time, returned everything to normal.

    Very odd.

Just recorded a quick video, watch right hand of screen. I delete a few text docs, create a folder, background turns black, create a few more, try refreshing screen a couple of times, nothing, then create another one and back to normal.

What theme are you using? Do you any program that mods the theme?

hmm. When I went into themes, the selected background was black. I've changed it to my background pic and so far I haven't managed to replicate the problem.

I'll update later in the day to see if the problems come back.

    Theme is simply
    Background-Picture,
    Choose a fit- Fill

    Many thanks

13 hrs and it hasn't returned.
So I'll mark it as solved (and it will probably return tomorrow :) )

Many thanks for all your help, I wouldn't have thought to look at themes.
