Just for the elucidation of new users/viewers it is the File Names that File Explorer sorts, not the icons. The icons usually show whatever program the files are associated with. Changing the first letter/number of the file name or adding a different letter/number/character at the beginning of the name will change the sorting. I have a lot of files and Folder with the tilde ~ at the beginning to put those at the top of the order in File Explorer because I use them more frequently.

The icon is associated with the filename.ext, though I get you meaning.

True, but by default Windows doesn't show the extensions but that is changeable.

Another nit I want to pick with Microsoft. One of the first things I do is show file extensions. Always have, always will. Add that to the list of annoyances that includes disabling System Restore by default, even though it's not very reliable.

Haha saw this image and I wanted to compare my settings with Ztruker. I got the same exact settings. Ztruker is a smart man.

I've always gone with the philosophy "If you can't see it, you can't screw it up"! What fun is that

What view are you using to look at the folder?

I don't think you can remove all Sort by choices. As far as I can see you always have to choose one.

How did you do this in Windows 7?
I am using VIEW-medium icons, align to grid . auto arrange is unchecked.....
In windows 7 icons within a folder stayed wherever I put them , regardless of name etc... Win 10 will only keep if I change name to a number etc and treats folders inside a folder different than icons.

I just looked at Windows 7 and didn't see any way to do it there either.

Can you layout the steps to do so on Windows 7? Maybe then we can figure out how to do it (if it's at all possible) on Windows 10.

The problem is you or at least I, can not disable the auto arrange in Win 10, whatever I do when I close the folder and go back the are automatically arranged in number or alphabetical order

This is discussed extensively in this tute and what you want to do has not been possible in Win10 for almost 2 yrs. - Enable or Disable Auto Arrange in Folders in Windows 10

I get around this by arranging in desired order and renaming. Not ideal but does what I need, like rearranging picture arrays.
