"I was playing f Hoyle card games. I have the CD from which I install the games. I clicked to run it full screen."

If you install it on your computer vs playing from the CD, go to the Program Files (x86) folder for the Hoyle game. R-click the .exe that launches the game and select 'Properties' then 'Compatibility' tab. Check the settings like on this old program from pre-2000.

You can enable the low resolution recommended for the game so it launches full screen and restores your desktop resolution when you close it. I did this for a computer where I install a Win7 game package so an older person could play Solitaire in full screen.

This is where my Hoyle files are stored: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Encore\Hoyle Card Games Classic
I clicked on the things you suggested. It came up HUGE, ten I got that same window about the best resolution being 1680x1050. I cllcked on that window and it brought up this window.

And now since all this is going on my text is hard to read. It's not solid.

HI, you need to change the resolution to 1920X1080. That should be the correct resolution for your monitor.

What is the make and model of the monitor? I don't see one in your specs.
    This is a Dell E207WFP.
I've looked and clicked all over and I can't find any place to manually set a resolution.

See screenshot in post #9. Check the scaling too. Set it to the recommend levels, if a custom scale is already set.

    Agreed.
My desktop resolution is set at the recommended, which is 1680x1050.

It looks to me like my monitor resolution is 1280x1024 50Hz. And then it lists Optimum as 1680x1050.

That a program settings folder. There should be an Encore folder in C;/Program Files (x86) or Program Files where the Application exe is located. That is the one that launches the games and where you should look for Compatibility settings. Post a screen shot, as it appears you ticked the 640x480 box, if everything looks HUGE (this is why the text in the screenshot you posted is fuzzy, it's too magnified).

I got that same window about the best resolution being 1680x1050. I cllcked on that window and it brought up this window.

That is game generated. Tick the 'Disable ... notification' box to get rid of it. Then Set the Display to recommended setting, as in my screenshot in Post 9. Launch game, resolution windows should not open. Does game look OK to use ? If so, you're good to go, going forward.

Here's a good MS article on how to use the settings in the Compatibility tab including the DPI settings - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...ams-compatible

Yes, you are right and I knew that but getting some flustered here. This is a brand new computer, and while I'm not the smartest computer owner in town I usually do pretty good with installing and all that and I've had a lot of problems with this computer. I have seriously wondered if it arrived with a glitch in the system. In any event, I decided to try a system restore because as it happens I had set two restore points this morning when everything was working just fine.

Would you believe that i think operation is frozen? It's been running for a good hour now and still shows the same message. It's got a 1 TB hard drive, but there really isn't that much on it. I figured system restore might take about 20 minutes.

So moving right along, what does one do about a frozen system restore operation?

System restore can take a long time. What does it say on the screen? Does it say preparing to restore? Or does it say restoring the registry? The 'preparing' stage can last a long time, apparently doing nothing. I've seen it take up to an hour...
