Lost Taskbar

It finally completed with a message that it failed. I into Safe Mode and started System Restore again.

Ii will add here that I wasn't having any trouble playing my games. I just kept getting that message that I wouldn't get the best picture unless I use the recommended resolution, which I was using. But then I had that glitch happen with the taskbar.

Anyway, we'll see what happens with this run of SR.

later ... Same result with the SR run in Safe Mode. It failed.

You and Dalchina helped me last March with my laptop, instructing me how to do an in-place repair, where I wouldn't lose any of my programs or anything. Do you think that might be a wise thing to do in this case?

The computer may be new, but the monitor is quite old - in fact so old that the Dell US support site no longer has any downloads for it. The Dell UK site still does however.

Your Intel® HD Graphics P630 is providing an active signal resolution of 1920x1080 which is beyond the maximum resolution of 1680x1050 that your monitor can handle.


You need to tell Windows the monitor that you are using and its capabilities. For that you need the .INF file for your Dell E207WFP. Dell UK has that...

Unpack the .zip file to a folder on your PC. Open Device Manager and find the monitor under Monitors. Double-click on it and select the Drivers tab, then click Update Driver. Select 'Browse my computer for driver software' and point it to the folder where you unpacked the .zip file. Once the .inf file is installed the desktop resolution and the native resolution should both say 1680x1050 and the mismatch that caused the taskbar to be off the bottom of the monitor should be no more.

I was so hopeful, but it didn't work. I tried twice. It tells me that windows has determined that the best driver for my device is already installed.

later ... I've decided I am real tired of messing with this. I ordered an inexpensive Dell monitor from amazon.com. Even tho inexpensive, it had better reviews than most of the more expensive ones, and it states 1920x1080 pixels. It's supposed to be here by Friday so I hope I can come back here and tell you I have it hooked up and everything is good!

Now that's out of the way for the time being, I'm concerned about this new computer failing two Restore operations, even in safe mode. I've used SR many times and I've never had it fail before. It concerns me because I'm thinking there has to be something wrong with the system for SR to fail. Yet there are no indications of that.
