How shut off screen while programs run in background?

    Folks,

I've got a new build. I use it to run a security camera program, Blue Iris.

It runs Blue Iris 24/7. What I'd like is for the screen to go blank 30 minutes after the last mouse or keyboard input.

    How do I do this?

Setting power plan does not work, since the computer is not "idle" for any length of time. Where and how would I get the screen to go off in this situation?

    Thanks,
    Ken

Hi, just to confirm, does screensaver (blank option) not work for you? Or are you looking for a power down option?

Noted: your stated OS in your specs is Win 7. This forum is for Win 10... are you running Win 10?

The Power & Sleep option will let your monitor go to sleep as long as there is no mouse/keyboard input regardless of how busy the system is. However, individual programs can prevent this.

Open an admin command prompt and run powercfg -energy . It will generate a report that tells you what is preventing your monitor from sleeping.

Sorry for the long quote, but what I got was this:

...which led me to an html file. With a LOT of issues!

    LOL.

I've attached it as a 7zip 7z file. Please look at it and let me know what you think. Meantime, I'll be looking up all the listed problems on the internet and, between Wikipedia and youtube, I'll soon think that I'm an expert in all things related to sleep.

Seriously, thanks, and any advice based on the attached file would be greatly appreciated.

    Ken

Ooops. I'm on a lot of forums and I don't always keep up with my profiles. Thanks for the reminder. It'll be updated shortly...but they're all on Windows 10.

As to the specific question you asked, it is purely the blank screen (the screensaver) which does not work and that I'm trying to troubleshoot.

    Thanks,

BlueIris is setting a System Required request but that shouldn't prevent the display from turning off. The other issues should be irrelevant.

Have you tried setting the timeout to 1 and closing BlueIris to see if the monitor will turn off after a minute? You can run powercfg -requests to see if there are any other active power requests.

    Code:
    System Availability Requests:System Required Request
The program has made a request to prevent the system from automatically entering sleep.
    Requesting Process \Device\HarddiskVolume1\Program Files\Blue Iris 4\BlueIris.exe

Power Policy:Display timeout is long (Plugged In)
The display is configured to turn off after longer than 10 minutes.
    Timeout (seconds) 1800

I've done that. Close Blue Iris and change time to 1 minute. Display stays on. Powercfg -requests shows just blueiris.exe

(Blue Iris runs as a service, as well. I am not knowledgeable enough to understand the differences, only that it will work in the background (as I want it to) because of the service. If I run the exe, then it runs in the foreground and I can interact with it. Could this have something to do with the screensaver not running?)

Does BlueIris show up under DISPLAY or SYSTEM when you do powercfg -requests?

Blue Iris shows up under SYSTEM when running "powercfg -requests". There is another, a Windows Media Player\wmpnetwk.exe that also shows up. Those are the only SYSTEM requests. DISPLAY shows "none", as does AWAYMODE, EXECUTION, and ACTIVELOCKSCREEN. PERFBOOST shows "Driver Legacy Kernel Caller Power Manager"

I'm not sure if any of that helps.

From my testing SYSTEM requests shouldn't prevent display sleep. But if possible I would try completely stopping BlueIris, including the service, just to rule it out.

Can you try NirCmd (http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/nircmd.html) and see what happens when you run nircmd.exe monitor off?
