    Single click open won't disengage

I am helping a friend transfer her files from her old laptop to a new one. Everything is done but she changed it to one click opening. While helping her with the reinstallation of her programs and data I found the single click open being confusing so I went to control panel/folders/view and changed it to double-click to open. The problem is, it will not revert back to double-click to open. I can't stop the one click open, even though the computer indicates it is set to double-click opening. Please help, I'm starting to wonder if she got a "lemon."

I tried the above on one of my systems and it didn't work at all (v1709). However, In File Explorer, selecting View>Options>Change Folder and Search Options>Click items as follows worked for me. I agree though, couldn't wait to change it back.

SorryI didn't understand. You said: View>Options>Change Folder and Search Options>Click items as follows. But, what did you click regarding single-click open options?

    Here's how I did it:
Type File explorer in the search box on taskbar
Choose File Explorer Options in the result.
When that opens on the General Tab in the Click items sections place a dot in Double Click to open item.
Click Apply and then close it.

It is possible you may have to reboot the computer for this to actually take affect.

I followed your instructions exactly and the double-click radio button is selected. I clicked apply, then OK, then I restarted and the computer acts as if single-click was selected although it is NOT selected when I return to the radio buttons.

    Hello Len,

If this is for a clicking on a touchpad, you might also check the touchpad settings to see what is set for its tap settings.

I have done as you suggested, mouse or touchpad same difference. I am beginning to wonder if this could be hardware. I did a complete reinstall of Windows prior to this issue.

The touchpad has it's own settings for this, separate from the system settings so it's not the same. If you do a clean install of Windows 10 on a Laptop you then need to download and install the touchpad driver from the manufacturer so you can open the touchpad settings to work with them. They are not usually available until you do this.

Anytime you do a complete reinstall this should also include installing & updating all drivers. A complete reinstall usually takes the system back to factory and any driver updates that may have been on the machine would no longer there and must be downloaded and installed again.
