    Right Click JPG File In Folder To See Preview in Explorer?

    All my folders are in details view which is how I like it. My photo or picture default viewer is Farstone Viewer and I like this as well and do not wish to change. However when I right click a JPG file in folder view I want to see a preview of that picture open up to the right in the empty, blank white explorer space and I don't. Suggestions on line seem to indicate that I can go into folder options and change to always show icons which I do not want to do or to change my default photo viewer to Windows Photo Viewer which I also do not want to do so unless I am missing something I am left with what a third party right click shell extension? If so which one and the caveat is that I do not want to screw up my default photo viewer Farstone nor my folder details list. Thanks.

    Leave your view in Details but also under the View tab choose Preview pane on the left. Find an image file and left click it once, should then show a preview in the right panel. If you right-click such a file Preview will be at the top of the menu and that will open the file in the default program, mine uses Windows Photo Viewer.

    Thanks for the quick response but Preview Pane is already selected and since I have Farstone Image Viewer as my default picture viewer as stated left clicking an image file only opens it up in Farstone.

    When I right click on a picture I want to see a preview in explorer. This is what I see now if a pic is selected before right or left clicking. At the moment I can not get a preview of the pic in explorer by either right or left clicking.

    Berton's suggestion should work. Here's what it looks like on my sys (I default to Details and use FastStone Image Viewer too).

    If you don't want to waste time debugging, try this small Store app. It will let you L-click a line in Details view, press the space bar and open a re-sizable Preview window (works with txt and pdf's too) from which you can open FastStone to edit, too. - https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/quicklook/9nv4bs3l1h4s?activetab=pivot%3aoverviewtab

    Here's an example of what you see when you highlight, then press Space bar -

    Thanks for the response. Normally I would have snipped the pic to save space (old habits) but I liked the pic too much!

    Well that sucks. I wonder if it is because I am using FastStone Image Viewer 6.4 PORTABLE version and I do not actually have the program installed? Thanks for the link. I will have to take a look at it in the next day or so. I do not have any MS store apps installed or at least not that I am aware of and would like to avoid if possible. Besides the app comes in at a rather hefty 92.18 MB : )

    I guess I am still hoping that someone can come up with a smaller footprint shell extension. I used to have one of those on win 7 but cannot recall what it was.

    My ribbon looks the same as yours ( :

    That's entirely possible. The portable version stores the app data, not in the Users' folder. Easy enough to test - http://faststone.org/FSViewerDownload.htm

    I love it, worth the install, at least to test. I use it all the time for quick look at picture info and quick load pdfs vs waiting for Acrobat to load (>3gb, for comparison). The 4.7 user rating is as high as it gets for Store apps, almost all of which score in the 3's, if not worse, if you peruse most free ones.

    Did you un-select Always show icons, never thumbnail under Folder Options > View?

    @mrgeek

    @Garyw

    @Edwin

    Will test new suggestions when I get home tomorrow. I am leaning towards a folder's option that I may have disabled but it could be in fact that I am using a portable version or who knows. I have a habit of disabling all sorts of stuff. I have got to start writing down the system changes I make along the way :) Thanks to all.

    Again, thanks to all that responded. That did it. I had a sneaky feeling that it was something that I mucked up in the folder options when I went all bat shit crazy and started turning things either on or off that I thought that I had no use for. I am grateful that I can continue to use the portable version of Faststone. A great program that seems to be a consensus choice.
