"Input not supported" error while trying to install W10

I am trying to do a clean install of Windows 10 Home on a refurbished Dell OptiPlex 790 system. I am using a 1 Tb Western Digital HD on which I did a complete format before attempting to install from a purchased factory OEM CD.

To this point, I can't get far enough into the set up and installation to do anything within Windows, but I still get the bouncing gray box on a black screen with the "Input Not Supported" message.

I have tried changing the monitor setting from it's internal menu, but have not been able to find a setting that Windows seems to like.

    Anyone have any suggestions...?

That's the OSD message from the monitor meaning that resolution is not supported, either too low or too high. See if your monitor has an "auto adjust" option in OSD menu or a button.

Thanks for the response, but I had already tried changing the resolution on the monitor before finally giving up and asking for help...

What is connection to monitor ? I see there are DVI and VGA connectors at the back.

Must be VGA. There is an unused HDMI connector beside the standard monitor connection. I suppose I could try an HDMI connection before I get too crazy with anything else, but, to this point, when I boot up the system, the BIOS splash screen presents as does the Dell POST screen. It is only when the Windows 10 setup process begins that things go haywire.

HDMI is better than (analog) VGA anyway, better try that one.

    Try changing the resolution to a 4:3 format, like "800 x 600".
