    Keeping programs open

My granddaughter seen me using my laptop yesterday .If I wish to use a program I double click the desktop icon and it opens up.
She told me why don't you just leave the programs you use most of the time just close them down to the task bar so they will open quickly .
Would that be a good idea.
    Many Thanks.

If the desktop is uncluttered then its just as easy to lauch from the desktop as the taskbar when there are no applications open.
Once applications are open that fill the display it takes an additional step to see the desktop and launch the application.
More often the desktop is cluttered and finding applications and launching from the task bar is much easier.
For any desktop application set to launch from the taskbar:
right click on the application > pin to taskbar

You want to know if its better to Minimize program window to task bar using [ _
    ] button or to close using [ x ] ?

If so then both methods have merits and demerits.

Minimizing app usually leaves it running and so it can be maximized (opened again a bit faster)
also it will keep things how you left like opened files etc.

Leaving program running if it will not be used may clutter system memory, if your computer has less memory it may slow down other applications, if software has problem called memory leak then it may consume more and more memory with time.

Closing app and starting it again usually resets it that may helpful if software is misbehaving and you want to reset it's state also it will free up memory for other software to use.

Even if you close program windows memory management usually only marks that memory as free but still may keep things for that program so starting program second time usually is faster.
