Frozen start menu in windows 10.

    Hey folks,

Anyone have the problem or fix for a frozen start menu in windows 10, where the alphabetical list of apps and the apps side itself freezes and simply refuses to scroll, and simply locks up.

If I do something else on the computer like open a browsing session in edge, a lot of the time the above problem rectifies itself, so not sure what is causing it.

    Any ideas welcome,
    Many Thanks

    Thanks for reply.

Well an update on this, I have tried many solutions to try and get the taskbar unfrozen (even reinstalled windows in top of existing OS) as it just seems to freeze frequently on its own, and other than go into taskmanager and restart windows explorer nothing else works.

A better solution I have found is just to use classic shell which works perfectly and even when the inbuilt windows 10 start menu is frozen, classic shell will still work perfectly.

I take it this is a common problem with windows 10 so if anyone else can shed any light on it, would be good.

Hi, never had a problem with the Start Menu myself (except it fails- as does any Win 10 Start Menu emulation- to handle more deeply nested start menus in a useful way), but plenty do. And yes, Open Shell née Classic Shell is far superior and what I use myself.

You've not said if you actually tried those tutorials: another possibility is some program somehow conflicting with it.

    Basic tests include:
    - does it work in Safe Mode?
    - does it work after a clean boot?

Another viewpoint would be that the next feature update is coming soon, so unless it's a program conflicting with it, you migth expect that to resolve it.

Thanks again. Windows explorer does crash too, just have to restart it. The thing is as you know yourself, when you have spend countless hours weeks and even months rebuilding windows from scratch as I have done, (used to have 32 bit gone to 64 bit) at the end of the day I may have to live with some of these inconsistencies, as I like other people only have a limited amount of time I can devote to problem solving.

Probably I'd imagine not many people have a windows 10 installation where everything including apps work perfectly 100%

Well, if it's any (non-) consolation, I have 2-300 progs installed and don't know of any problems... I've upgraded from 10240 onwards.

file explorer- if it crashes on right click, diagnose by progressively disabling non-MS shell extensions (Shellexview (free) is a good starting point).

If it crashes otherwise, it's either system corruption or conflict with an installed program (he says rather too obviously).
Have a look at the red x's in Reliability History,

    run
    SFC /SCANNOW
    from an admin command prompt

Compare with what happens after a clean boot

    .....

And don't forget to check your disk
Hard Disk Sentinel (trial) is very good
    chkdsk c: /scan
    - reports but doesn't repair.
    chkdsk c: /F
    - repairs, requires restart.

Note: your specs say Win 7 32 bits.
