I understand that you will not be able to use OUTLOOK without a subscription to Office 365?
Outlook is and always has been a part of the Microsoft Office Suite (ie) Word, Excel, Power Point etc. To use Outlook you have to purchase a version of Microsoft Office, it does not have to be 365, though, that is the latest. This has always been the case, though there was a time, a long time ago, you could install just Outlook but you still needed to purchase it.
Outlook.com is an online Email client, like Gmail, or Yahoo Mail. It replaces Windows Live Mail and Outlook Express, just to confuse matters.
Also, in the Windows 10 Apps is Paint 3D, which is an enhanced version of Paint. Paint is still available for now Under Windows Accessories.

Paint 3D is not intended as the replacement for Paint. If you run Paint in 1803, there's an 'Product alert' icon at the top right. This says that when Paint is removed an App version of Paint will be available free from the Store - so there will still be two 'Paints'.

Why don't you make a backup image of your Windows 7. Upgrade it to Windows 10. If you don't like 10, then restore your image of 7.

    Spunk,
Windows Live Mail was available, as an email CLIENT, up until a year or so ago. When Outlook email came about you knew it was not going to be free for long. See

OUTLOOK.COM is not an email CLIENT. It is a web based email service. It can not be installed on your computer. It can only be accessed through the web. OUTLOOK is the CLIENT to be installed on your computer. You get it through OFFICE 365 through a subscription and possibly purchasing it outright. (OFFICE 365 that is). Gmail comes with Chrome OS as a client (free) and also as a web based email service if you do not have Chrome OS installed. Yahoo is just a web based email service and can not be installed as a CLIENT.

    Transition to Outlook.com[edit source]
    Outlook.com, with third-party add-ins within a new message preview
Outlook.com was first introduced on July 31, 2012 when its beta version was made available to the general public. Existing Hotmail customers could freely upgrade to the preview version of Outlook.com and downgrade back.[46]

Outlook.com graduated preview stage on 18 February 2013. According to Microsoft, the upgrade was deployed on April 3, 2013; the user kept their existing Hotmail accounts and received the option of having an @Outlook.com email address. By May 2013, Outlook.com had 400 million active users.[47] By May 2014, Outlook.com continued to have 400 million active users.[48]
    Transition to new infrastructure[edit source]
In May 2015, Microsoft announced it would move the service over to what it described as an Office 365-based infrastructure.[49] This was followed in June 2015 by the introduction through an opt-in preview of new features, including new calendar layout options, a filtering service called "Clutter" and new theme designs

Windows Live Essentials 2012 is no longer available on Microsoft's servers, but the offline installer for it can be found in the Internet Arcihve Wayback Machine. It will install in Windows 10, but as it is out of support you'd be better off with something else as your client.

All that is true, they are webmail services primarily for use through a browser. But an email CLIENT can also be configured to access them. Thunderbird is a popular 3rd-party one.
Setting up a new account with Thunderbird is easy. All you need to do is provide your user name and password for your email provider and your email address.

    Thunderbird and Gmail
Thunderbird can be set up to work seamlessly with Google's Gmail. Messages will be synchronized between your local version of Thunderbird and web-based Gmail.

The Mail app supplied as part of Windows 10 is also an email CLIENT. It to can be configured to use to any or all those webmail services.

    Thank you Bree.
So Windows 10 Mail will be the email client and not Outlook in Office 365? I will be able to click on a "CONTACT US" link on a web page and the Windows 10 Mail client will pull up my email service (Outlook.com web based) to start a NEW email message to the link on that web page?
Why would Microsoft have two email clients Windows 10 Mail and Outlook (subscription purchased through Office 365)?
    Thanks again. Big help.

Well, the email client in windows 10 is free and limited as compared to MS Office Outlook.
MS Office Outlook is capable of installing All MS mail formats IMAP Or POP, I personally have Office 2013 Pro upgraded from Office 2003 Pro, I have 5 POP account 6 MS Accounts including @HOTmail, @live, @msn.com, and @Outlook.com also a Gmail account all running in MS Office 2013 they all download and send mail from there own addresses Calenders Sync, and contacts now called people are sync. and each email account I have configured to maintain its own Address Book. I also have All my IMAP accounts set to keep all mail locally In their perspective OST files. I work in remote areas with poor to no internet connections
So you see there are huge differences between the free program and the workhorse Office Outlook.

The Office one has more features, but the Windows 10 Mail app has the basic features you need. It's the same for word processing, you get the free Wordpad in Windows, but Microsoft would like to sell you Word in Office.
