Windows 10 restarts rather then shuts down

    Hi

I have had this issue now on 3 different windows 10 systems 2 of my own and also my wife's.

Up until recently it was rare but in my case it's happening even couple of days it seems.

I go to shut down and rather then shut down it puts me right back at my log in screen.

The only way I can then shut down is to go into my power settings and turn off fast start up and then save it and shut down and is fine then. I then go in on next start up and enable fast start up again and is fine for a few days then it starts doing the same thing again.

I did google this as that is how I found out how to get around this but is there any idea with Microsoft is going to address this very clear bug in the system as if it was just me I might think it's my system but where all 3 laptops have experienced this as have others it's clearly an issue with Windows 10.

Any updates on when this will be fixed or if there is a fix already out there that I can download to fix this issue or setting I can adjust that will fix this and still let me keep fast start up active?

    Thanks
    Dave

If it works without Hibernate/Fast Start, keep it off. Make sure to disable Hibernate with Powercfg /hibernate off. With today's hard drives and Windows 10 being faster, there is no need for Fast Start.

I would never keep fast start up off it takes like 3-4 times as long to start up from a full shut down condition as I always shut down and unplug when going to bed or going as as lost 1 computer years ago to a lightening strike near the house and since then Just shut down and unplug when not going to be using the system and I know this one here takes at least 3-4 times longer to start up.

Besides that isn't a fix that's a work around and would rather Microsoft actually fix the issue!

If it is taking longer to start, there are startup processes that are causing the slowdown, which MSConfig can help to figure out which processes to trim out of the startup. A lightning strike has zero to do with Fast Startup, so why mention it. That is something that requires making sure you have proper earth ground at the house for incoming electrical, a Gas discharge on CATV and Satellite, good surge protectors with good grounding on each outlet, making sure to disconnect from electrical if you have a lot of lightening strikes. See the following about Surge protection from the IEEE. http://www.lightningsafety.com/nlsi_lhm/IEEE_Guide.pdf

Microsoft does recommend to shut off Fast Start & Hibernate if you experience shutdown issues.

I did not ask about surge protection this was years ago and the reason I unplug my system so all I was doing was explaining that it is a full start up as in your first response you take about hibernate and such which is nothing to do with this!

What I asked is is there an update or a patch or fix to this issue where my computer and others for that matter sometimes restarts rather then shuts down?

If you did not ask about Surge protection, then do not mention about losing a computer to a lightening strike. There is no patch that will be issued by Microsoft, since the startup process taking longer is caused by too many programs in Startup process and a computer that needs to be diagnosed with MSConfig as to what is causing startup issues. If it works when you shut off Fast Startup, then keep it disabled and disable Hibernate. Simple solution that has been suggested since Fast Startup came out and does not need to be used with today's faster Hybrid and SSD drives.

This a machine-specific problem, only some models from some manufacturers do this. HP seems more prone than most. In fact, some of their machines machines seem to have been built with the fault baked in...

I sent the unit to HP Repair. They replaced the motherboard and returned the unit to me within 7 days with no scratches or dings. All appears functional now. There must have been a bad batch of boards because numerous threads on HP Forums discuss this issue.

If this is the case for yours, then turning off Fast Start up may be your only option, MS are unlikely to issue a patch to work around a hardware fault.

However, you don't have to disable hibernation as well. Just turn off Fast Start up in the Control Panel. Then instead of shutting down before you pull all the plugs you can hibernate instead. In fact, you'll probably find it a lot faster resuming from hibernation than a Fast Start up.
