Stop things in task switcher moving around

    Hello,
I've tried to search around for an answer to this, but not knowing how to describe the icon/preview things in the alt-tab task switcher, am at a bit of a loss.

Like on Mac OSX, Windows 10 likes to shuffle everything around in the task switcher, just to slow you down a bit/confuse you/intensely annoy you/make you want to punch Bill Gates in the face. I can imagine car manufacturers adopting this same wonderful technique - wouldn't it be convenient if the pedal on the left is the one you used most recently - if you press the brake, the brake pedal moves to the leftmost position. Then if you press the accelerator, it then moves to the leftmost position. Brilliant, what could possibly go wrong?!

Enough of that - my point is, is there a way to correct this incredibly ridiculous, awful interface bug, and keep everything in the same place unless I close apps/folders etc?

    Thanks,
    Paul

Um, maybe a couple of screenshots or even a video would help to explain what you're seeing?
    What build are you using?
    Windows key + R, winver
    Thanks.

...to continue from 5 years ago(!)
Here are a couple of screengrabs to illustrate my point...Windows - very annoyingly - changes the order of the icons representing the apps/windows I have open, always putting the most recently used one in the top-left of the order, and generally shuffling the others around to ensure I can't immediately click on "that one on the right" to hop to After Effects and then "the one below it" to hop to Photoshop, for example. I have to specifically look for the app. Take a look at these two grabs - I have the exact same apps/windows running:

...and then, pointlessly, all changed around:

It is so annoying that Windows changes the order of them! Is there any possible way to correct this bug to stop this silly behaviour? Any suggestions would be gratefully received!

    I'm on Windows 10 version 22H2 (OS Build 19045.3086)

Hi, I agree the most recent is put top left.

If I repeatedly use Win tab, the same order is always displayed (very limited trial basis) until I select one, when the above applies of course.

It seems you are saying the order of the others (bar the first) is random if you repeatedly use Win tab - or is there some other factor?

Try the Simple Window Switcher (SWS) feature of ExplorerPatcher.

No, only the selected one moves to the top-left/first position; the others just shuffle along to take up the space - which does effectively mean everything has moved (depending on where the one that just moved was previously located). Such a silly UI decision by Microsoft!
@hdmi - I had a look at ExplorerPatcher; not sure if my issue is annoying enough to install something that seems to have mixed reviews, so I'll probably just live with this annoying bug!

Those mixed reviews are mostly from people who never could figure out how to use it properly. After your computer restarts to finalize the install of a Windows Cumulative Update (i.e., one that upgrades your Windows to a new build number), sometimes it can happen that it fails to load the desktop + taskbar so only a black background with a mouse arrow appears. When this happens you can uninstall ExplorerPatcher by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. In Task Manager, you can choose Run new task, and a separate dialog window that is functionally similar to the Run dialog (Win + R) will open. In there, you can enter a command %programfiles%\ExplorerPatcher\ep_setup /uninstall to open the uninstaller dialog window of ExplorerPatcher. After the uninstall finishes, you can try installing ExplorerPatcher again, which typically fixes it.

ExplorerPatcher does not patch/modify any system files. It just stores some of its settings in the Windows registry. Aside from this it needs internet access to grab the new symbols from Microsoft each time after Windows is upgraded to a new build number. It can grab them automatically and it will tell you about it in Notification Center. Only production builds of Windows are supported by ExplorerPatcher, as has clearly been stated in the documentation. So if you are subscribed to the Windows Insider Channel, it very often means that ExplorerPatcher either will not work or will work only partially. The latter problem, in spite of the fact that it is, and always has been, a PEBCAK has been being a major source of complaints about ExplorerPatcher for as long as I can remember.
