    Windows 10 Dell Laptop

Hey there everyone, i'm a massive noob to this forum
    I've got a general enquiry
Im running windows 10 on a 2-3 year old dell laptop, i haven't added a spec list but can do if need be

however i have found that the past year my laptop has stopped charging it's battery,
i've done all i could to try and fix this,
i.e go to device manager.... uninstall relevant battery drivers, restart....
it fixes it sometimes, however if i leave my laptop on sleep it fails to charge the laptop & just keeps it running whilst staying on the same percentage, would it be a case of finding a new charger? my battery is in a healthy state & definitely can hold a full charge, however since i've owned it, i've not been able to leave it off, without the charger in without it going dead.

another problem i've found relating to this
i produce music using fl studio 12, and i've found that since this problem has started to occur, if i take the charging cable out of the laptop my laptop runs like a dream, as soon as i plug it back in (this is when it doesn't charge) it really lags out my fl studio, but when it's not on charge.. as i say it runs perfectly...

would this be a case of a new battery, new charger... or simply new laptop?

cheers guys, sorry for such a long post

    Welcome to TenForums @Charly10

You've given enough specs to identify the most probable cause - the manufacturer.

Dell laptops are particularly fussy about their chargers. The centre pin of the plug is not a power pin, it is a data connection that tells the laptop the power output of the charger. This plug can become damaged, or the laptop connection it plugs into, meaning the signal no longer gets through. Although the charger will still power the laptop, the battery won't charge as the charger is unrecognised.

This is a typical post from Dell's forum....

NB: third-party chargers may not have this data feature. It would be best to get a genuine Dell replacement.

This is a long shot - it may be worth removing the battery for a few minutes to see if that resets something.

Long shots are always worth trying. For the best chance of success, when you take the battery out you should press and hold the power button for at least 30 seconds to drain any residual charge.

But I have a Dell laptop about the same age as the OP's and was speaking from experience. In my case it was a second hand purchase and supplied with the wrong charger (an HP one) that would power the laptop but not charge it. I had a universal charger that would sometimes (but not always) charge the battery. The cure was when the supplier sent me a genuine Dell charger. There are a number of sophisticated charging options in the bios, all of which rely on being able to identify the charger via that data pin.

I have a Dell laptop too. For Dell specific problems I use Dells own support forum which is very good. Dell Community - Dell Community

If you enter the bios on a Dell you should see charger and battery details presented. These are electronically 'read' from the components concerned. If the charger is not recognised then it will say so.
