[SOLVED] Desktop label keep changing to Downloads

I know that this is not a new, or a unique issue, and tried all the MS suggestions on one of their forums. But so far nothing worked. Already reset everything to default as suggested. Does anyone have any other ideas please?

To post a screenshot (as requested above) please use the Insert Icon above your post. Thanks.

Definitely need a clearer statement of the problem showing what, where, and ideally when. After what event did this start happening? Can you think of any relevant history- changes-actions?

Have you ever relocated your Downloads (or any other folder) on this device or any device that may be synced with it?

Do you have any relevant System Restore points?

My windows 10 build version is 1803. and I never use system restore points because they are s***t and never work. I use Macrium and mirror the system drive after any change in the installed apps. Usually I have three weeks of backups. I also have no data on the system drive.

In my current Windows Explorer, the Downloads is named Desktop. I have two different Desktop labels as you can see the different contents and by image labels of the two attached images.

But when downloading, this can change to two Downloads labels the majority of times, but not always. I will add another screen capture when it show up on a download.

Hi, you've not answered my question
"Have you ever relocated your Downloads (or any other folder) on this device or any device that may be synced with it?"
    - but I assume you've made a mistake relocating your folder. Could you please confirm that's the case?

Unfortunately there are a number of threads here where people have made mistakes with this. Sometimes it's next to impossible to unravel this.

You say you use imaging frequently- can you not restore an image?

Otherwise please have a look at:

My apologies, I missed that question. The answer is no. I never touched the folder location. Also, Quick Access never worked. The label shows up but cannot assign any folder to it.

Having reread one of those very useful articles you posted- good find! - it would seem you perhaps have enough for a solution there. Have you tried working through those steps, and do you think the cause was similar?

Else again, could you not restore one of your disk images, or are they all too recent?

    Hey ineuw,
Might be a long shot, but I wonder if it's issue with the Desktop/Downloads in the Shell Folders entries and/or User Shell Folders entries in the following registry keys. I had a similar issue where I had accidentally renamed the wrong one when fixing the latest OneDrive update fiasco and ended up with duplicate names.

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

Warning: Before changing anything in the registry ... Please make sure you have a backup and Export any keys before making changes !!!

To inuew: This is in reference to what you said about System Restore points being crap and never work. They always worked successfully for me (when I needed to do a SR on a few instances) if you run it from the Advanced Startup Options menu. Here is a link showing ways to get to this menu. @Mcd73165. Thanks for the suggestion, although SR failed on me more often that it was worth my time, so now I diligently create mirrors every 3 days, or more often if I added something important. It is also true that my past sorry experiences with SR which started with Windows XP, has improved since. Nevertheless, it only takes me 6.5 minutes to restore a Macrium mirror of 21GB and it never failed me.

@dalchina, this issue has been around since I installed the software in mid June. I have no mirror backups prior to the 1st week of August. Sorted out the more important issues, as I was getting used to Windows 10 and left the issues of lesser importance to deal with at the end. Also, I was aware of the many changes and improvements done behind the scenes by the updates, I was sort of hoping that MS will catch on before I had to deal with it. But, please read on. .
@Eagle51 You are right! So far I counted 4 assignments of Downloads, but I didn't touch them yet. Please see the attached images of the two regedit trees.
