    Adminstrator Prompt

Hello, my desktop no longer displays the administrator prompt when I need to sign in as an administrator. Instead of appearing, all I get is my desktop background picture, and it just freezes there. If anyone can help that would be awesome!

Are you saying that when you expect this dialog to appear

all you see is the desktop background and your computer freezes up? Or do you mean something else?

hi Try3-- yes that is exactly what I would like to pop up instead of my desktop background.

I think you need to log out of your standard user account and log in to an Admin account to further diagnose the problem.

1 Personally, I would always disconnect from the internet before this test because it involves running in a less secure mode of operation.
2 When you are logged in as an Admin, go to Control panel, User accounts, Change user account control settings.
3 The Admin account should also get an Admin challenge. If the Admin account also has the same problem then you will need to temporarily enable the Built-In Admin to do the test.
4 However you get there, change the setting to Notify me only when apps try to make changes to my computer (don't dim my desktop) and see if that avoids the problem in your normal Admin account & when you return to your standard account {the one you reported the problem about}.

5 If the problem is avoided by using this setting then it implies that there is a display problem rather than a Windows problem. Personally, I would reinstall the display driver & check for any BIOS updates then see if the fault was fixed.
6 If the problem is not avoided by using this setting then you could try SFC but I do not know what the chances of success are.
7 If the problem only happens in your standard account but not in your normal Admin account then I'd say that user account is corrupted & you need to create a new one for routine use.

8 Do return UAC to its highest or second highest settings after completing your tests, and
9 Disable the Built-In Admin again {it is not password-protected so should not be left active when you are online}.
