    Administrator Privileges in Safe Mode?

I've just discovered there is a BIOS update for my Dell laptop. I normally do these updates from a standard admin account. I tried the upgrade this time from an admin account in Safe Mode but I got the error shown below. Why is this happening? The BIOS update proceeded OK from my usual admin account.

Frequently Safe Mode does not load drivers for devices or needed access to other things that make changes.

It is a safety written into the code for the bios update from Windows. Just install from the Dos update, not in Windows. Just make sure that your laptop is plugged in and the battery is fully charged.

Check the installation instructions that Dell provided - they are normally given on the View full driver details page & you should see that link in the BIOS update section of the Drivers & downloads list.

On my Dell, they always say BIOS updates must be run from within Windows itself.

Dell just say "Run the BIOS update utility from Windows environment". There is also a more complex DOS based installation method.

I'm curious why the BIOS update fails from an admin account in in Safe Mode but works fine when run from a normal admin account.

    Steve,

I have never seen any list of the Windows services that are suppressed in Safe mode; I have only seen it described as running "a minimal set of drivers and services".

My own Dell's BIOS update does not have any equivalent DOS method so I have nothing to base this on but perhaps the DOS method holds a clue about the Windows service that is missing from Safe mode & upon which the Dell BIOS exe file depends [something like .Net services, perhaps].
