Recovery, your PC needs to be repaired

I received this message on my PC and it says the Boot Configuration Data on the PC is missing or contains errors. File: \boot\BCD, error code: 0xc000014c. It goes on to say I will need to use recovery tools and if I don't have any installation media to contact the manufacturer. How can I fix this or can I fix this without losing all of my data? I assume I will have to operate in safe mode to work any fix and attempt to recover the data, so can I recover my data while in safe mode? I do not have the media discs for the PC and I do not think they would work even if I did since the PC was initially loaded with Windows 7 and was upgraded to 10 about 2 years ago. I was having problems with another of my PCs and learned that because I have upgraded to 10 the drivers, etc. that were initially loaded can no longer be downloaded from the manufacturer so I would not be surprised if that would be the same for the OS now that I am on 10. Is there a way to repair the corruption in the OS (if that is the case) without losing all of the data on the PC? It started with my PC being non-responsive while it was sitting and not in sleep mode. When I could not get it to respond I tried using the task manager but that would not work so I had to power it off. When I powered it back on I got this message.

Find a flash drive that you can format ( > or = 8 GB)
Create a bootable windows 10 iso:
    Download Windows 10

Insert the windows 10 iso flash drive into any USB port
Power on the computer and boot to the widnows 10 iso clicking the applicable keyboard key.
List of PC brands with their corresponding hot-keys
Alternatively, temporarily modify the BIOS boot order so that the external USB HD is on top.
It may take 5 - 10 minutes for the iso to load while viewing the Microsoft Windows icon
Select language, time, currency, and keyboard, or click next
In the left lower corner click repair your computer (do not click install as this is the method of clean install)

In the windows 10 troubleshooting menu on the iso start with startup repair.
It may fail and display that it created a srttrail.txt file
See if you can save this file to a flash drive and then transfer the flash drive to a working computer to upload into the thread.

Next click system restore. Start with the oldest system restore point and keep repeating as necessary until there are no more system restore points. If there are no system restore points or if system restore fails advance to the next step.

    Click command prompt
This should open a black box with title bar: Administrator: X:\windows\system32\cmd.exe and prompt: X:\Sources>

Find a camera or smart phone camera to take pictures of commands and results. Then post images into the thread.

These are commands to type. For comments they will be in parenthesis.

    1) bcdedit /enum
    2) bcdedit | find "osdevice"
    3) c:
    4) dir
    5) d:
    6) dir
    7) e:
    8) dir
    9) x:
    10) diskpart
    11) list disk
    12) list volume
    13) select disk 0
    14) detail disk
    15) list partition
    16) select partition 1
    17) detail partition
    18) select partition 2
    19) detail partition
    20) select partition 3
    21) detail partition
    22) select partition 4
    23) detail partition
    24) (if there are any additional partitions then continue in the same fashion)
    25) select disk 1
    26) detail disk
    27) list partition
    28) exit
    29) bootrec /fixmbr
    30) bootrec /fixboot
    31) bootrec /scanos
    32) bootrec /rebuildbcd
    33) (reboot and check boot) (if boot fails then reopen command prompt and advanced to next steps)
    34) chkdsk /r P: (change the letter P to the drive letter displayed in step #2 for the partition)
(this may take many hours and typically displays ETA)
(reboot as necessary to run the chkdsk command)

There are additional commands that depend upon the commands and results.
Please make sure to post images into the thread for additional troubleshooting steps.

Seems like it would be so much easier to just make a USB flash drive of Kyhi's recovery tools, run Macrium Reflect from it and select the utility under the restore menu to fix Windows boot problems.

OK. It appears that I have been given 3 different approaches so now I am confused on the proper path to fix the problem. Can you each tell me based upon the 3 different suggestions being given from you all which way I should go to resolve the problem?

I believe I already have a flash drive with windows 10 OS to use as an external boot drive -- there are four folders on my usb drive labeled boot, efi, sources and support (along with four files autorun, bootmgr, bootmgr.efi and setup). Of course within the four folders there are subfolders and the total size of the folders and files on the usb drive is about 3.5GB --does that make sense?

I did do a search on the forum based upon the reply from NavyLCDR and found this post "Windows 10 Recovery Tools - Bootable Rescue Disk" but I admit without going through the entire post I felt it somewhat overwhelming seeing the below information. Also, there was a reference to DOS and GW basic that I did not understand in connection to my problem. So would I have to read that entire post to be able to use the tools that are referenced in Kyhi's recovery tools post? I only have that single flash drive for now that is 16GB -- I have others that I could probably back up to my larger drives but I believe only one of them is an 8GB flash.

" Kyhi's instructions a few pages back are easy to follow.

Basically, you get things working in the x directory, then copy changes to the mounted version, update the boot.wim, and copy boot.wim to your flash drive.

Takes a couple of goes to learn sequence off by heart.

There are some limitations as the iso is based on Kyhi's original profile, and not all things are easily changed eg US keyboard, as the iso does not contain other keyboard options."

I've never found the Microsoft Automatic Repair Tool worked for me whereas the Macrium Reflect recovery has worked a few times. I recommend in future you use a backup program like the excellent Macrium Reflect Free. Schedule frequent backups to a second drive and you will always be able to recover from such situations in under 30 minutes.

There are advantages / disadvantages or pro and con of each method.

The boot fix method that NavyLDCR suggested using Macrium is excellent for boot repair. If there is an operating system, registry, drive file system, etc. problem this method does not fix them and additional methods are needed.

Kyhi boot rescue is also excellent in that you have a menu of tests that can be performed on an unbootable system.
For example you could test the drive with HD Tune, Sea Tools, etc.

The windows advanced troubleshooting menu takes more steps than the others. It can fix boot, operating system, some registry problems, problems with updates, drive files system, etc. You get to see the command and the response to the command and then decide the next step.

So there are tools in the tools box and some of them can be used to troubleshoot and fix problems.
Many of the steps are going to be trial and error.
The error messages or codes or the response to each command can then lead to the next troubleshooting step.

There is no one fix method for 0xc000014c
This link displays methods to fix the operating system, boot, and drive file system.
    0xc000014C: Fix for Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10

For this error code you should be prepared to perform multiple troubleshooting steps.

OK. What I think I am hearing is that this will be a daunting task no matter what. I will review all of the information provided so far and before I try anything I will post back questions to make sure I fully understand any approach that I attempt. I thank you each for the information you have provided and I know I will have many questions as I attempt to figure out a resolution.

The Sony support for this computer ended with Windows 8.1:
    Sony eSupport - SVE15115FXS - Support

You can start out with Kyhi boot rescue and test the drive:
    HD Tune:
Post images of the results for these tabs:
    a) Health (SMART)
    b) Benchmark
    c) Full error scan

    Sea Tools for Windows

OK. I have downloaded all of the files located in the post from Kyhi that I believe to be applicable -- there are a total of 9 files that I have downloaded (dewi_17.01.14.7z; 7z1805-x64.app; 7z1805-src.7z; 7z1805-extra.7z; 7z1805-x64.app; winpese-x64-14393_17.01.16.iso; Win10PE_SE_2017-12-02.zipped; image-prep_17.01.14.7z; and, Windows ISO Downloader.app). Is your suggestion that I load the "winpese-x64-14393_17.01.16" ISO (1.2GB) file onto a flashdrive, plug in that flashdrive and boot the system (striking the F2 key upon startup for Sony Vaio)? Will the process bypass the error message and allow me to run the tests you are suggesting?
