Well that explains why the Kyhi approach did not work for me because I did copy the files to a usb flash drive and try to boot from the drive since it already had an iso file or so I thought titled bootfix. I do have the windows 10 on a usb flash drive and that is what I was actually asking about because I was instructed to go that route since the Kyhi files would not boot.

So what would you suggest use the Kyhi method or use the prior post suggestions from Zbook? Because now I am even more confused.

I have downloaded Rufus 3.3 but I have not run it since I am not sure how to proceed. I guess I can run it and use the files already on the USB drive that I have copied from Kyhi correct? I should be able to cut the files from the usb and paste them into another folder, then run the Rufus program to create the flash drive, correct? Or should I just follow the instructions from Zbook?

There is a windows advanced troubelshooting menu on the computer and there is a windows advanced troubleshooting menu using the iso. The computer's windows advanced troubleshooting menu has more options such as reset save files or reset remove files that are not availble using the iso.

The startup repair should work or fail.
The system restore should work or fail.
The files that were saved between the day of the restore point and the day the command is used are the files that cannot be restored.
There is no need to take pictures of startup repair or system restore. For system restore view all of the restore points. Start with the oldest and move to the most recent so that you have the most available restore points.

If startup repair fails it may create a srttrail.txt
The srttrail.txt can be copied to a flash drive and then move the flash drive to a working computer to transfer the file and post into the thread.
For command prompt commands in the windows advanced troubleshooting menu it is useful to take pictures of the commands and the results. Then additional commands can be provided based upon the results of the initial commands.

If you can boot using the Kyhi boot rescue then you can copy the files to another drive.
This should enable you to copy all files and not miss any days of saved files using system restore.
Then you can clean install and restore the files.

A system restore is easier as the tool is immediately available.

If you copy and paste the users folder it could take 15 -20 hours for a 750 GB drive.
For the first few hours there could be interrupts for duplicate files, long file names, etc. So if you choose to copy the users folder it should be started several hours before you go to bed to get passed most if not all of the interrupts and have it run overnight and into the next day.
With Kyhi there is also Macrium backup image which is substantially quicker.

For the Windows 10 iso it needs to be bootable and it is bootable by default.
For the Kyhi boot rescue it needs to be bootable and it is bootable by default.
If you copy and paste to a flash drive it is not bootable and then you would need to use software similar to Rufus to make it bootable.

    1) format flash drive as fat32

    2) mount Kyhi iso as a drive

    3) Copy files from mounted drive to flash drive

    4) only for legacy bios pcs, mark flash drive partitiom as active. Not needed for uefi pc.

No need to faff around with Rufus etc.

I am going to try to absorb and understand this information because right now I just feel overwhelmed by it. I do not believe there will be any restore points as that has been a problem since upgrading to windows 10. Although I have selected to have them automatically created there are never any there when I check for them.

I am just circling back to this issue and I am not sure if what has happened is good news or just a fluke. I downloaded the Kihy ISO file "winpese-x64-14393_17.01.16" and burned it to my flash drive with rufus. I installed the flash drive and expected to have to answer the language selection, then click on the repair computer but I did not have to do that because it loaded everything as it should have normally. I do not know if that is what was supposed to happen because when I used the standard windows 10 recovery files I was directed to select language and then decide if I wanted to repair, etc.

I am going to copy all of the files onto an external hard drive before I let the computer shut down or anything and I am wondering what I should do now since it came up normally? What do you think I should do to ensure this is actually fixed? I am booting from the usb drive now and not the computer so I assume that if I try to do that I will have the same error message.

The Kyhi boot rescue has a windows XP interface whereas the windows 10 iso has a windows RE interface.
In addition to backing up important files with copy and paste or making an image the drive can be tested and there are some commands that may be able to be run using the Kyhi boot rescue to check the status of the operating system, drive file system, etc.

    Test the drive using:
    HD Tune: (free edition)
    https://www.hdtune.com/
Post images for the results on these tabs:
    a) Health (SMART)
    b) Benchmark
    c) Full error scan

HD Sentinel is another option: (free edition)
Hard Disk Sentinel - HDD health and temperature monitoring

Run the DM and BETA log collectors and post zips into this thread:
BSOD - Posting Instructions - Windows 10 Forums

Open disk management > by default the columns are narrow and need to be widened for each Status and Volume > double check the status column and make sure that the characters within the parenthesis are in full view and none of the letters or parenthesis are cutoff > post an image into the thread
Disk Management - How to Post a Screenshot of | Tutorials

See which of these commands work with Kyhi boot rescue:

    sfc /scannow
    dism /online /cleanup-image /checkhealth
    dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth
    dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    bcdedit /enum all
    bcdedit | find "osdevice"
When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread

    chkdsk /r /v M:
(change the drive letter M: to the partition drive letter displayed using the find "osdevice" command in the above step)
(This command may take many hours)
(report the findings into the thread)

I never received a notification that there was a response to my thread from several weeks ago so I am just seeing your reply. OK I will run those tools but I want to make sure you understand that the laptop is restarting with out using the Kyhi flashdrive. It appears that the laptop's internal OS is working now although I have not changed the boot options back to harddrive -- does that make sense? I have the flashdrive removed from the laptop but it is restarting on its own from sleep mode. Unfortunately, both of my Sony Vaio laptop computers with randomly come out of sleep and power back up without my knowing it so they are often on for long periods of time and I have no idea they have come out of sleep mode.
