    BIOS / UEFI setup

    Hi,

I have several Dell E6410's here with latest Win 10 1803 update and A17 BIOS. All ok apart from one machine which the power light stays on at shutdown. This particular machine happens to be set up with the boot option set to UEFI whereas the others use Legacy.

So I tried to change the boot option on the problem machine from UEFI to Legacy and it fails to boot saying no boot device found. I did notice that when I set it to Legacy a button saying Load Defaults, but when I pressed that I was warned "Load all default settings. Current setting will be lost" which put me off, so I cancelled out of that. Should I hold my breath and press this button to properly enable Legacy mode?

You can't change mode without a lot of problems put it back as it was so it will boot. The power light shouldn't be anything to do with UEFI there maybe other settings that give the problem

This may have the Latitude laptop "Latitude On" option.

FWIW, Dell does not (officially) support Win 10 on this model. As some older hardware is being knocked off of Win 10 by updates be aware this may happen to this model. I've seen other Dell's that will not work with 1803.

I dont know anything about "Lattitude on" option, looking at your pdf my model is excluded I think.

I have 4 other Lattitude E6410's that are fine with 1803, but they were setup with Legacy boot mode in the BIOS.

If its nothing to do with BIOS, how do I diagnose the problem?

If I want to set my Boot mode to Legacy, does that mean I have to wipe my disk, re-install windows and all my programs?

No. You need to do am image backup of the hard drive, convert it to MBR, which will erase everything. Then restore the backup image. And finally create a system partition compatible with legacy BIOS booting.

I have made a macrium image. So far so good!
Can you explain "convert it to MBR" in a bit more detail please?

    The HDD is 250G.

This link shows that UEFI causes problems on some Dells:
