    Boot Issues Screen Flicker

    Hi,

I updated the other day to build 17134.228 and now when my pc boots the brand name comes up, then the screen flashes off and on and the brand name is back up again and normal boot resumes.

Anyone else see this occurrence in this or other instances or have any ideas?

The update that you mentioned brought the error, it occurred for reasons. Either from your computer if it is compatible or because of some driver that Microsoft tries to update generically.Enter safe mode and repair the equipment. If this gives option, start safe mode network mode, to update the corresponding drivers.Remember that you have in the drive C: Windows.oldTo return to the previous compilation.successes

Screen flickering is typically related to GPU driver issues.
Sometimes Norton AV can cause these problems.
Open device manager > click view > show hidden devices > expand all rows > look for any row displaying a yellow triangle with black exclamation mark or an unknown device > post an image into the thread

The most up to date drivers can become problematic.
The driver(s) can be uninstalled and reinstalled.

The "My Computer" specs displayed Nvidia GTX 860 M
Is this the only GPU or is there also Intel GPU?

Okay good call on the GPU that jogged my memory and I had updated my Nvidia GPU driver (grudgingly) right around when I did the Windows update. Left a message in the drivers thread of their forums. Tempted to install an old release to see if the issue goes away but don't feel like doing that process now, just happy that it is most likely not something serious broken on my end.

Yes I have Intel graphics just added those to specs. I usually keep all my drivers pretty up-to-date. I know that especially new GPU drivers can be problematic. Those are big pieces of software.

Just checked device manager (found show hidden/couldn't find that expand all rows setting but just did it manually). No yellow triangles. The only strange thing I saw was two "Generic PnP Monitors." One was washed out and had this error: "Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45) To fix this problem, reconnect this hardware device to the computer."

It is a laptop so that is strange. The other monitor in device manager was working properly and said "Present: true" and that it was migrated and configured 6/15. The greyed out one said "Present: false" and also had migration and configuration dates on 6/15.So I did "uninstall device" on the "disconnected" monitor and nothing horrible happened.

Thank you! I will run and post that ASAP.

You seem very knowledgeable so if I may quickly ask you another completely different question:

Concerning the issue with Windows update where it says "some settings are managed by your organization." What is going on and am I able to fix it? I am a home user. Have network on private. In system properties under computer name it says "Workgroup: WORKGROUP" and although it says you can change the workgroup name I am unable to.

I've been told this happens when a group administrator in Pro makes a registry key change. I use Ccleaner occasionally to clean the registry (which I've also been advised not to do). Would that trigger this message in Windows update? I don't get this. I'm not making any registry changes.

Well I reverted back to an old driver and still getting that flicker so i guess it isn't the gpu driver.

    Dear @andyouf
About "Some settings are managed by your organization": Great discussion in this ongoing parallel thread right here at TF. See Windows Update-Some Settings are Managed by Your Organization for more info.

Hi Ed, thank you. Yes, I cross-posted . I will refrain from doing that in the future.

Could Ccleaner registry scan invalid registry object deletion be the cause of the message or does it have to be an active merge/alteration to the reg and not a deletion?
