Think of an image as a time capsule. All the tweaks, installed programs and personalization will be captured in a "time capsule". When you run into problem and you have no idea what happened, restore that image and you'll go back to the same exact state as the time you created that image.. with all the tweaks, programs and personalization that you made.
I suggest that you continue doing it (the backup image creation). If the basic creation and testing of a Macrium Rescue USB took so much of your time, think about trying to troubleshoot your Windows OS? You can spend the entire week trying to figure out and troubleshoot the issue, or, pay a technician for a day of work that he will charge you (but actually only fixed it in 30 mimutes) or simply restore an image and pick up were you left off in 30 minute (but could be a couple of hours with USB drive) or so like nothing happened.

Bree - ?...you said first image good to have in case things get fouled up while doing the tweaking, so I don't have to start over by doing "reset".....but I just said how that first new-as-is image gets same results....(no tweaks./changes have been made yet).
You installed Macrium, that's one 'tweak' that would be lost. If you've added another browser like Chrome or Firefox that would go too.

This is new computer - wondering why it doesn't look like it is latest w10 version from what I have seen.
Windows specs says version 1709 build 16299.547...
I see others have version 1803 build 17134.191
    @ImLost,

The way Microsoft works is that a new version of Windows 10 is released approximately every six months. The version 1803 was released in April this year, the next version is expected to come out in October. The version number is the year and month that Microsoft finalised the release version, so the next one will probably be 1809 (2018, 9th month). Once a new version is released it is gradually rolled out to everyone automatically. This is a phased rollout so not everyone gets it at once, some are only just getting 1803 now.

The way you get the latest version is that once released, your windows update service will automatically download the update to the next version. and one day will say you have a big update to install that may take some time. When it is done you will be on the latest version.

Manufacturers will use the latest version they have at the time the PC was built, but often this will be the previous version by the time the PC gets sold. Your 1709 is the previous version. This does not matter because the previous version is still being supported with security updates, and will get updated to the current version automatically once it has been used for a while.

Very (very) rarely, the update to 1803 get's stuck and the PC won't work afterwards. This is where an image of the PC as it is now would be invaluable.

So during the process of tweaking/adding/changing things to set it up for personal use, just hope it doesn't foul up. If it does, going back to first new as-is image.....or to "reset".....would be the same. Would lose any tweaks done so far, but that's that.....otherwise, would have to do an image after every tweak. When done setting it up the way I'll use it....then try making an image.

Now, if what I said is not correct, I think I'm done with all this.

Yeah, set it up the way you want and then make an image.

Some folks make an image as soon as they install Windows, but that's optional. I do because I have never used reset and wouldn't want to take the time to reinstall Windows. I can restore the image in 20 minutes.

But usually, you want to restore an image made after you have stuff tweaked to your satisfaction.

That might be a few days or a few weeks after you first install Windows.

After that, make another image every once in a while and let that newer one be the one you would normally restore. Your tweaking will likely be an ongoing process and you'd probably want to capture your newest good tweaks with an image.

I make a new one every month. Some people make one a week or every 6 months.

Windows 10 updates itself constantly, so an image made in December is going to be noticeably different than one made in July. There's nothing you can do about that. But normally, you'd want to restore a recent image that contained your recent tweaks.

Of course, if today you restore an image made last January, Windows will begin updating that. You just have to live with it.

Guys opinions on using edge or chrome? I've read chrome is the most used one, but edge works "better" with w10. Keeping in mind ease of use, making website shortcuts, do bookmarks, etc, really basic stuff. Dont need bells n whistles. I do remember how easy IE was for desktop shortcuts, 2 clicks. Screwed up a good thing.

You can't create a shortcut in Edge. The best you can do it right click on the page you on and iopen in IE, then drag that to the desktop to create the shortcut. Short sighted and lacking for Edge.

IE is still built in to Windows 10. Edge has an option in the 'three dots' . . . menu to 'Open in Internet Explorer' for the page you are viewing. IE is also in Start's 'All apps' list under 'Windows accessories'.

Personally I like to use Firefox as my alternative browser.

I like Chrome as my daily drive. Easy to bookmark / edit, web pages remember zoom level, click on three dots upper left, hover over tools, click on Create shortcut, boom on desktop.

Browser are like cars, the one you drive is always the best.

There is no reason not to continue using IE, I do. And I have been using Chrome lately getting used to it. both work way better than Edge which I find useless there nothing that Edge can do that Chrome or IE can't do better and easier.

Had been using chrome for a while. Did not seem easy, thought I recall shortcuts being a pain, and took lots of clicks for stuff, maybe I was using it "wrong". Couldn't get favorites to go to the right spot. Tried this edge, 2 clicks to get shortcut on the task bar or start tile. Add favorite easy, look up a favorite also. Chrome was dots, bookmars, folder, another folder, then click for the favorite I wanted.

If I start using edge, then decided I want chrome, do all the changes and personal stuff get automatically switched? (besides 'favorites', I know there is a way to switch/save them from edge to chrome)
