No, I'd shut down completely before removing the stick--if that's what I wanted to do.

But I'd reboot a few times and walk through the process a few times to gain familiarity. Type up some instructions that you can refer to later.

If you DON'T hit F12 or use the Novo Button, the PC should just ignore the USB stick and boot normally, as if the stick was not connected.

You are going to be revisiting Macrium pretty soon anyway assuming you actually make an image file and are going to at least simulate a restoration.

Figure stuff out when the heat is off, not after you've had a disaster.

After I end up at Macrium.....then? Go to 'eject' for 'ok' to remove usb? Then turn off, then back on to see if 'normal' screen comes back up?
If you booted from the usb and have the Macrium screen there is no need to eject. Once Macrium has loaded the usb is no longer being accessed, you can safely pull out the usb.

You shut down Macrium by clicking the red button in the bottom left corner. You will be offered the choice of Reboot or Shutdown. You'll be back to the 'normal' screen next time the PC starts up.

Getting mixed up with so many guys saying things in different ways.

Back to square one. Was a usb-3 stick supposed to be used for rescue media because the comp usb ports are usb-3? The 8gb I used probably (how to know??) not a 3, had it for a while. The inside thick section is chrome. I have Verbatim brand 16gb, that part is light blue.

If the 8gb is ok....simplest/easiest way to test it? =

Machine is off. Insert usb rescue media. Turn machine on, while tapping f12. Boot menu comes up. Click on the listed usb. Machine should start, should end up at the log in screen. Put password, log in to desktop. Go to "eject", wait for the okay to remove usb stick.
What you have explained here is that the MR USB failed to boot, which can mean two things. 1. The rescue media did not create correctly, 2. You waited to long to press F12, With modern computers you need to Press the On button and simultaneously spam the F12 key until you see your getting the boot menu, then Selecting the USB will open Macrium Reflect. Not Windows.

Clintlgm - no, I didnt say it right......thats not what I did, I was asking if thats how to do it.

    This is what happened:
Started with comp off, put the usb in. Turned comp on, tapping f12, go "boot mgr" screen, says "boot option menu" on left. Arrow to efi usb device, hit enter, and the Mac Ref screen came up. Pulled out the usb, and clicked on the red button at bottom left corner (Bree).......but nothing happened.

Did you notice that my pic also says "Macrium Reflect Free Edition"??

Did you notice that my pic also has the same menu choices you mentioned?

And you say your pic doesn't look a lot like mine?

Tough to help you if you can't or won't post screen shots.

You could make an image right now in less than 30 minutes, but it might take 40 more posts to get it done without pictures from you or some understanding that we may be on the same page.

It's only about a half dozen mouse clicks to make the mrimg file.

Going purely by that description, I'd guess something is wrong.

You may or may not have booted from that USB stick, but I have no idea in the world what you are seeing.

If you can't post a screen shot, all I can suggest is to re-make the USB recovery stick and try again.

You apparently went off the tracks somewhere on that. I don't know what instructions you used or where you may have gone wrong.

You should arrive at a screen that looks much like mine--pale blue squares on the right, with darker blue lines through them.

Each of those pale blue squares is a partition. Your laptop drive should have several of them.

The dark blue lines show the amount of occupied space in each partition.
