    Cannot rename folders in explorer, but, can at a save as dialog

    Hello,

    I have a similar issue like the link at the bottom of this post. When in Windows Explorer, on both the network or local drive, I can add folders, I can delete folders, but I cannot rename them. I also cannot move folders. !BUT! when in a program, and at a save or open dialog, I can rename folders. This is not the first time we have encountered this issue, and the last one we re-imaged. I would like to avoid that.

    Any though on this issue would be appreciated

    Hi tekjock and welcome to Ten Forums!

    Found another thread on technet with some suggestions to solve a problem. Strange is, that no forum post suggest what a cause is, just some workarounds...

    I have some question:

    - do you get any message when trying to rename a folder?
    - are you running some tweaking program (or did run it in the past on this system)
    - which solutions did you try?
    - exact Windows version

    I get the error below, i have tried several of the above mentioned steps, minus the registry items. Always weary about mucking with the registry.

    Windows 10 Version 1607 (corporate PC not able to up to the latest)

    Did you try changing view (to details)?

    If you can do it, think that inplace repair could help (setting defaults for explorer etc.) mount Windows ISO (same edition you are on) and run setup. It will leave all the apps and data intact.

    What is the complete path to the file you are trying to rename?

    any path, any location. Local drives and networked drives, does not matter

    But, like I said above, I can from a save as or File open dialog.

    Guess you already run sfc /scannow command?

    Can you show permission for one of those folders?

    GOOD NEWS EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I found this here

    Code:
    Navigate to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FolderDescriptions

    From here there are 5 items that you need to delete or rename. In my case I just renamed the folders with "-BAD" after the original folder name. If you want you can also search for these strings so you don't have to manually look.
    The names are:

    {2112AB0A-C86A-4ffe-A368-0DE96E47012E}
    {491E922F-5643-4af4-A7EB-4E7A138D8174}
    {7b0db17d-9cd2-4a93-9733-46cc89022e7c}
    {A302545D-DEFF-464b-ABE8-61C8648D939B}
    {A990AE9F-A03B-4e80-94BC-9912D7504104}
    renamed all 5 to -BAD, then restarted, all done

    thanks to all who responded!!
