Screen Goes Black For 2-3 Minutes After Startup/Restart

Upon reaching the desktop after a restart or startup, my screen goes completely black for 2-3 minutes. After that, the desktop appears again and everything works as expected – although some system tray items continue to load. This is not an intermittent thing - it happens every time I startup/restart. Also, it's not a screen hardware issue - I experience no other issues with the screen - e.g.: it does not flicker or cut out at any other time. I've checked for and installed latest drivers, firmware & BIOS updates.

I’m thinking it might be a software conflict, but have no idea what it might be. This has been going on for quite a while and persists through system updates.

Factors that may have an impact
For security reasons and to lower system overhead, I’ve disabled certain system items at startup (e.g.: remote access, geolocation service, work folders, etc.) and things such as the fingerprint reader – I never use it.

Any ideas/help are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, have you tried a clean boot to see what difference startups make?

You can do a performance analysis with the Windows Performance Recorder if you wish. (Technical)

I've checked for and installed latest drivers
that should not be necessary in the vast majority of cases- Windows supplies most of your drivers. It is much more the case that people with driver problems have to use older drivers. I can't personally think of a case where installing a later driver than supplied helped someone. (We do not advise routine use of driver updaters)

A clean boot yielded the same result - 2-3 minute blank screen after reaching the desktop. After performing the noted updates, I have noticed the blank screen sometimes comes after the login screen, but before reaching the desktop. Haven't done a performance analysis yet. Your warning about updating drivers, etc. is well founded. Since performing the updates, I've experienced 5 BSOD!

The delay (black screen) could well be related to a low level driver, or a driver of some description but without the evidence we can't say.

Was the PC ok with 1709, assuming you had that installed previously? (In resolving a somewhat different problem it proved necessary to grab a driver from the 1709 build and use that with the 1803 - no idea if that will be relevant here yet of course)

Sounds like you need to try to get back to the original drivers.

When your system is stable (no BSODs) you could try verbose boot logging:
Enable verbose logon messages in Windows 10

(simpler than using the Windows Performance Recorder perhaps, but less informative).

Except for the blank screen delay, everything was relatively fine with 1709 - although things are never as fast as you want them to be. Not sure if I can roll back the firmware/BIOS updates, but will look into undoing the driver updates. Computers were supposed to make life easier. SHEESH!

Sorry, you're saying you still had the same delay with 1709?

Note: to completely reverse the driver updates you can try:
    - via Device Manager (roll back drivers)
    - using a System Restore point created before you made the changes (if any exists)
    - restoring a disk image - if you created one before doing the updates.

Finally if within 10 days of upgrading, you can 'Go back to the previous build' (1709).

Yes, I was experiencing the delay with 1709. Will try your suggestions for driver roll backs and/or system restore. Thanks!

Ok, then it's more likely as you suggested to be a software conflict or problem program rather than Windows drivers.

Once you've resolved the BSODs, back to the idea of verbose logging and Windows Performance Recorder.

And does it happen in Safe Mode?

Are there any HP utilities installed?
