    Where Could Deleted Files Be?

    Win10.

I copied hundreds of image files from G: to E: to make room on G: for Macrium images.

Looking at the sizes they didn't match so I tried to get duplicate finder software to compare the directories so's I'd know what was missing and be in a position to delete those safely copied over.

I was trying out a number of freeware tools - three or four of them - and got nervous about each of them because none of them made clear up front whether I was going to be offered an option of what to do... so I didn't actually go the full distance with any of them....

    Aborted them all.

But now I find the G: directory in question is nearly empty. And the E: directory I already knew to be incomplete. Though there doesn't seem to be much extra space. Makes me think the files are still there but in a recycle bin.

I looked in the Recycle bin on the desktop and the last recycled files it finds are back on 25 July.

Is that one bin supposed to handle all drives?

Do perhaps these tools lock folders or files while working and my aborting leaves things in an uncertain state so's files effectively disappear perhaps?

Is there anywhere I could look for these missing files... ?

A bit gets changed and tells the FAT (File Allocation Table) and MBR that there is space available at that point to write to. They do not always go to the Trash bin. Especially on a Network drive.

G: and E: aren't those partitions ? Or are they separate disks ? Check recycle Bin properties to see how much space is allocated for each partition/drive.

How did you copy those files ? Hope you didn't use move (Cut and Paste)
Id suggest you use something like Download DiskBoss - MajorGeeks To see exactly which files are gone where.
If they are really lost maybe this Download Active@ UNDELETE - MajorGeeks can help you retrieve them.
Important: Make sure you don't write anything to those disks until you solve the problem.

I didn't do anything to them. is the point. I installed one utility after the other and the next before the last had finished. Got myself confused as to what was going on. One of them seemed to be ready to go off and compare and possibly delete without me even pressing 'go' - just as soon as it had two directories to look at....

    So I aborted everything.

Then I find this situation.. Bit funny, eh?

Yep, thanks for the links. I'll download both and run them tomorrow, when I can get back to that machine.
