    Problem with explorer.exe

    Hi,

I have a very strange problem which I don't know how to deal with. When I start a Window, I've got a black screen with the cursor and after pressing "Ctrl+Alt+Delete' buttons I'm getting into screen where I can choose few options:
    Lock
    Switch user
    Sign out
    Change password
    Task manager

In a Task manager, I open next Run new task and I have to every time write there word "explorer.exe" to be able to get in my Windows
Can someone help me? I'll really appreciate any advice how to solve it.
    P.S,
    No restore points

Every time when I start a Window,
Hi, could you explain that better please? Perhaps by answering these:

    a. Can you boot and log on normally?
    b. When you log on, do you see your usual desktop?
    c. How are you 'starting a Window' exactly?

    History:
    a. when did this start?
    b. are you aware of any event that preceded this?

    What is your Window build?
    Windows key + R, winver

    Thanks.

Could you answer the other questions please? Thanks!

    Otherwise the response is simply:
    - from an admin command prompt run
    SFC /SCANNOW
    - try a clean boot
    - create a new user for test purposes- do you see the same thing?
    - do an in-place upgrade repair install which keeps all progs and data and most settings - but as you are on build 1709 you would need to use a build 1709 iso.

@dalchina is giving you good advice but do try this as well because it is quick, easy & often stops problems like this.

    1. Boot from your Windows installation disk/USB or any other bootable disk/USB.
    2. Do not take any action in it just boot from it.
    3. Then boot into Windows normally again.

This has been known to stop a black screen with cursor problem.

Hi, what does 'it' refer to?

Have you done an in-place upgrade repair install as I mentioned? Here's how:

Download a 1709 iso from here (make sure you get the right one):
Windows 10 Recovery Tools - Bootable Rescue Disk - Windows 10 Forums
    Post #3, 3rd download -> download tool

Then follow this, using that iso:

Note: strongly recommended in all cases- create a disk image using Macrium Reflect (free) before and update after any major change to protect your PC, data, and give you a means of recovery.
