    Windows moving destop icon.

I created a new folder on the desktop and Windows 10 1709 moved it time and time again. I created an image and saved it to the desktop and Windows stopped moving the folder and is now moving the image - is there any way to stop this?

"Moved it again" ? How? Like Windows "Moved" the file into a folder or somewhere on else on the desktop. Eg. From top left corner to bottom right?

If so then disable "Auto Arrange Icon" by Right Clicking on the empty space on Desktop then go into "View" and Deselect "Auto Arrange Icons".

"Auto Arrange" has not been enabled for years on this PC because I put some icons on the right side; Windows is messing with me.

If you search the forum you will find a very very long thread on the issue of desktop icons being rearranged, and many other such threads too. This is not a new issue- it has applied to some users for several generations of Windows.

For those affected the usual recommendation is to use a 3rd party tool.

You just saved me a ton of time scouring for answers to this or starting a new thread. Only thing weird for me is it just started. Would have the issue occasionally before but they'd usually stick. Sometimes they do eventually stick. At this point I regularly rearranging two or three icons after a restart (I guess this will become more of a pain as I add programs). For awhile I thought reverting from native resolution to something else and back again fixed it but, alas, no.

I'm not hating on MS developers but it is amazing how difficult a fix this is for them.

Some utilities those who experience this problem have found useful to stabilise desktop icons:

DesktopOK 5.55 Save and restore the desktop icon positions.

(1 page of a 50 page thread on topic)

"ShellFolderFix is the solution to Windows not remembering their size and position and also includes additional tweaks and shell enhancements" not icon positions. But I don't know. They also mention it was tested on Windows 10 as well. You can read more here:

Thank you. I was just on the SoftwareOK site for awhile. I ran into that thread about editing the registry using that script when you mentioned it in another thread while I was searching for answers to the issues. I'm sure it works well but I've got that paranoia with the scripts.

I like Desktop Restore because it doesn't have any extra Windows features I don't need but I doubt those add much weight to these light programs. I prefer DesktopOK because you can have it auto-save on shutdown (and select to only do that if there was a desktop change) then auto-restore on restart.

The differences in how the issue presents itself is interesting. Changing resolutions doesn't affect mine (restart does) at all while other users that is what does it. Some users their desktops get trashed while mine it is just for new icons/shortcuts/documents where they move toward the bottom right of the icon group or the Word documents will revert to having the one I wanted on top back underneath the other. Haven't tried but I am guessing if I rearrange a few old icons that are in established positions that don't move on restart they will revert (actually that is the case with the Word documents; just decided I wanted them repositioned. Then like you said some have no problem. Mine just started. Would like to know what triggered it.

Desklock v1.2 is old but it still works on my W10 Home. Simple to use. Along with Desktop Restore my desktop is rock solid.

I wonder if there are any that will restore desktop on boot and then shut themselves down. DesktopOK it looks like you have it start with windows minimized and it stays there unless you want to close it. I guess it needs to stay open so that upon restart it will save the current arrangement if icon changes were made (I like that option that if no changes are made it doesn't go through save/restore process).

Does DeskLock just prevent the user from making icon changes by locking them in place? That wouldn't work for the reboot rearrangement issue would it?

Nothing seems to move my icons unless I unlock them. I used to have problems with them periodically moving on a reboot or for other various reasons but not since installing DL.
