Upgrade 1709 to 1803: my computer "gradually" freezes randomly.

    Hello,

After upgrading to 1803, my system freezes randomly while using it.
The freezing starts with a piece of a screen that stays on foreground (cannot get rid of it).
Then programs are stopping one-by-one (when trying to use them). Some will work, but eventually no programs
    are reacting anymore.
Then the keyboard isn't responding anymore, but the mouse still is.
I can use the startmenu once, then it stalls too.
Everytime I start a program with the mouse (the only way then) "something seems to start, a blue circle is seen and nothing happens anymore.

And as I said : it is quite random. But most within an hour or two max.

When I restart, a usb ports are hanging. But when I shut down and restart, that's ok.

    Tried already:
    + latest display driver Nvidia
    + all updates are installed
+ no real worriyng events in eventslog

For the time now I am back to 1709, but at a time I must go further.

Can anyone point me in a good direction of solving this ?

    Cheers!

    Hi Kees

In no particular order I would check memory

    MemTest86+ - Test RAM

Scan your drives for errors with chkdisk

and check your manufacture for BIOS updates. Not saying to update BIOS but you should see if one is available and if you are out of date how far. Since you are builder you already understand the implications of BIOS updates.

Assuming everything checks out and you do perform the 1803 upgrade I would check installed drivers against manufacturer's driver. Said simply are you run a generic driver where a vendor driver exists.

You mentioned you were running latest nvidia driver is 1803, is that the same one you are running in 1709?

You also mentioned looking at the event log but at a summary level I would look to "Reliability history" to see if it has captured something that may nave been overlooked.

Wish I had a good answer for you but I don't. The simplest would be to back everything up and do a clean install. This is very good if you have been Upgrading from the beginning, it will give you a clean slate, and fixes many Upgrade issues.

Choose Custom Install and Delete all Partitions from the Top Down. That is if you don't need any of your old files, because this will remove everything, and you won't have the Windows.old Folder to fall back on.

Backup any Product Keys with Produkey.

You could also run THIS TOOL and see if it tells you anything.

I suspect this has something to do with the ASUS Z87-A, or some of the Software it uses?

Do you have the latest BIOS?

Not upgraded from the beginning. Last clean was dec 17. Yes I was thinking that, but I deferred it together with deferral of the update (365 days). It's a lot of work (programs)

I am not sure, but could be. I read more ASUS problems with 1803.

    Yes

Most of the people here are more knowledgeable than I -- but that said -- do you create and maintain restore points?

I make full images of every situation in the case of 1803 and changes.

You said this starts with a portion of screen freezing and goes south.

If I read your responses right with the new driver it freezes in both 1709 and 1803

You mentioned you were running latest nvidia driver is 1803, is that the same one you are running in 1709? = Both did the freeze

So 1709 wasn't freezing, you went 1803 and freezing started. Just the move to 1803 means you got new drivers. Now you've fallen back to 1709 and it freezes.

Have you tried removing the nvidia drivers entirely using DDU and then reinstalling an older driver? Say from six months ago.

The upgrade doesn't necessarily have to be the cause, it could be pure coincidence.
For starters I would restart the computer in safe mode. I would also run anti-malware apps.

Did you run the "Windows Update Troubleshooter", this is an easy tool to run and it may tell us something. "Always do the easy stuff first" is a quote from a very wise person....me lol.
