PC will not boot on restart, works most of the time from power off

Lenovo IdeaCenter K450, 4-5 years old. Specs in My Computers.

This problem started recently, after one of the updates though I'm not sure which one. I currently have:

PC will not boot on restart, works most of the time from power off-winver.jpg

after uninstalling KB4345421 and KB4338832 as I was trying to see if one of those had caused my booting problem.

When I do a restart, the system shuts down correctly then starts to reboot. I get the Lenovo logo and nothing else. It will sit there as long as I let it. If I power it off, wait a few seconds then power on it will boot up correctly most of the time. Maybe 1 in 4 or 5 will hit the same hang condition.

Could this be a problem with my Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250GB drive? Here is the Disk Management window:

    Attachment 196638

I reset UEFI by jumpering BIOS reset then powering on, then powering off, moving jumper back then powering on again. Didn't make any real difference. Default enabled CSM which I disabled. I'll take pictures of the BIOS screens and add to this post in a few minutes.

Any other information I can provide?

Since the problem seems to occurs prior to actually booting Windows I don't think a clean install of Windows 10 (1709 or 1803) would make any difference but I'm willing to give it a shot as I have good Macrium backups.

I'll post this now then go get the BIOS pics and add them in a bit.

    Here are the BIOS windows:

    Hi Rich.

If you suspect SSD you could boot with Kyhi recovery and see if you can access files.

When your disk management screen shot was up you appeared to be booting UEFI but I noticed your boot priority is set Legacy first. Was it always set this way?

If you disconnect all the other drives does it boot?

Not sure how current your Macrium is but that would be one way out after confirm SSD is talking.

The Primary Boot sequence is strange. If CSM is disabled, the Boot Mode should be "UEFI Only", since the system cannot boot in legacy mode. Also, the Boot priority setting is irrelevant, the only possibility is "UEFI first".

Strange for sure. I'll check and report back. Thanks.

CK, the system boots and runs fine when it boots. The SSD works well, no problems of any kind shown anywhere.
The problem seems to be in the BIOS as it never access the hard drive nor do I hear any beep . If I do hear a beep then I know it will boot.

I'll go check the legacy stuff now.

    Thanks again.

Edit: No difference. I could only change that setting by enabling CSM mode so it looks like it only applies to CSM mode.

I ordered a new Samsung 860 EVO 500GB SSD SATA III drive. I'll do a Clean Install when it arrives to see if that makes any difference. If not I'll still move up from a 850 EVO 250GB to this 860 EVO 500GB so win/win for me $98.99 from Ebay, new drive. Should have it by next Friday, the 27th.

    Hey,
I noticed a similar problem. My computer doesn't restart from Windows nor does it restart from BIOS. However, when I press my restart button on my case, it boot's. It load's perfectly fine when powering it on or shutting down. I don't know when this started occurring but on my oled panel on the motherboard, it display's code "C0". Anyone have idea what this could mean?

Only similar thread I found was this: Error OC Memory detect on X399 Threadripper Zenith Extreme | TechPowerUp Forums and it had a couple systems mentioned. Problems included bad memory module (one out of 4) and bent pins on the CPU (two PCs).

I don't see how this kind of problem can be anything but BIOS related as it's happening long before any attempt to actually boot from the hard drive. In my case when I restart I can't even get into BIOS setup. I have to power off and on then usually I can hit F1 (this is a Lenovo K450) to enter Setup. Even trying to get to UEFI via Settings doesn't work because it does a restart to get there.

If I could get the BIOS/EFI code for this Lenovo I'd try re-flashing it to see if that would make a difference but it's not available on their web site.

I'm going to try removing the SSD then see if I can boot KYHI's Rescue flash drive from power off, then do a restart and see if I can boot it again.

I've had problems like this at the shop with donated systems and ended up scrapping them because replacing everything but the CPU did not fix it and the computers weren't worth spending much money on. My Lenovo on the other hand would be worth a new CPU, maybe upgrading to a newer one. I have a Intel Quad Core i7 4770 3.4Ghz (4th Gen I think).

Strange that the BIOS would get updated as part of Windows Update and then start failing to restart. I believe in reading post that your machine was restarting and then after updates quit working.

Also interesting that you are running V1803 with no updates (17134.1). A simple inplace repair may resolve. Maybe even just getting updates onboard might resolve.

I found this Tool on Lenovo site. Under the heading "Important" it list K series machines. Please check yourself as to suitability of tool on your system. Might be worth running and seeing if it updates BIOS.

New SSD's are always nice. Looking at updating wife's laptop but she says it is fine with a spinner.

Interesting. I downloaded and ran it and it says I need an update for

    Realtek Card Reader
    Intel Chipset Driver
    Realtek WiFi

I'm going to go ahead and install them and see what happens.

Thanks for the link and info.

I have had a similar issue with two different Intel-based laptops. In both cases the solution was simple (in my case, at least), disable power saving option in Device Manager > System devices > Intel Managegement Engine Interface, which always defaults to enabled after clean install or feature upgrade:

PC will not boot on restart, works most of the time from power off-image.png

Running Windows Insider builds, I get an upgrade about twice a month. I often forget this one setting after an upgrade, only remembering it after first failed restart. Going to Device Manager and disabling the power saving option, everything works as it should.

Not saying this solves your issue, I just wanted to tell what resolved mine.
