Help! Windows randomly does not wake from sleep.

    Hi,
Randomly, my PC will not wake after I have put it into sleep mode.
When that happens, I am unable to shut it down other than with the power button.

I have no idea what to do.
    Please advise!

First, be sure it is REALLY in sleep mode, in which ALL the LED lights except one will turn off, and the remaining one, usually orange, etc., will slowly grow brighter and dim and brighter in pulsing sequence.

I mention this because I have been helping set up my friend's HP Elitebook 840 G5 which is similar but not exactly the same as my Elitebook G2. Note: both are running v 1709 now and both use the HP Optimized (balanced) Power Plan recommended by HP. When I set hers to sleep, two of the LEDs remained white/bright and the other colored one showed computer activity. So it was NOT in sleep mode, but neither could I access it through the keyboard or mouse and either get it On or Off (shutdown). So forcing shutdown with the on/off power button was the only way. After around 17 hours of messing with it and following Internet advice which did not work ....

    THIS did >

    Power Options

power button: batt & plugged > sleep

    HP Optimized:

Sleep: allow hybrid sleep > batt & plugged: On
allow wake timers: batt > disable / plugged > enable
PCI Express / Link State Power Management: batt & plugged: moderate

Of course there could be other factors, such as it trying to download an update, an app not allowing sleep, malware, etc. The fact that yours is seemingly random means you may have to find a way to un-random it: i.e., figure out WHAT was going on differently, even how long you waited till it was in sleep, etc. .... or if it went into automatic sleep, and what was happening in that case.
