Some browsers will reopen automatically with the pages that were closed on the reboot.
If you need to open them manually that can also be accomplished.
Open downloaded files in file explorer, notepad, etc. are likely lost with the unexpected reboot.
Agree but my Chrome is set to open with a set of pages, not resume where I left off. I added new tabs and then did a restart.
Chrome opened exactly where I was before the restart. (Search results, new tabs, this thread)
Firefox does not display the same behaviour although I didn't spend a lot of time in the options. OP said IE did what chrome does, open where you left off.
If someone knows if this is possible in Firefox if you could post settings I would like to try again.
I'm afraid not. It's not a setting in the app itself, it's the way the code of the app has been written to interact with Windows. I investigated this in depth when MS changed Windows' restart behaviour starting with 1709 and unexpected apps started popping up all over the place on a reboot.

If you want to open browser web pages after an unexpected reboot this method works for firefox, edge, chrome, etc.
highlight the url then click control + alt + t simultaneously and click for as many windows as you had had open. Most of the time it will open the tabs with the windows for each browser. If this fails then go to settings and history and open the closed windows if they are available. This has worked for up to 20 windows with 100's of tabs.
Maybe ... disable networking overnight.
No network means no updates.
No updates means no reboot.
When doing the updates I don't bother with closing Firefox. I just open it as usual then click History then Restore previous session. Hasn't seem to make any difference how many tabs or windows were open, has always re-opened all of them.
