The best thing is always save work and shut down all open applications, so that your work is saved, in case the machine does reboot.

Yesterday was 'Patch Tuesday', not a good day to leave work unsaved over night. It is highly likely that it was the Cumulative Update released yesterday that initiated the restart.

If you has Pro you could pause updates while you had important work to do, but your profile says you have Home. The best you can do in Home is set a metered connection to stop updates being downloaded until you are ready for them.

There is a setting under advance that allows a notification to tell you a restart is required I would turn that on. Might help, not a fix.

You didn't say what application you were using. It is my understanding that the newer builds of Win 10 will restart your apps after a restart and will save data.

I tried this with Word 2013. Opened, typed a quick sentence and initiated a restart. (My auto save is set to 10 minutes, didn't want this to be engaged for this test).

Sure enough Chrome opened with all browsers tabs where I left off as did my Word document.

If might be worth asking specific application vendor when they are planning to take advantage of this functionality. I believe it is call Application Recovery and Restart.

For sure the second Tuesday of every month, Patch Tuesday. Released 10:00 am Pacific time. Think that is 12:00 your time, 1:00 pm my time.

Also change that setting I mentioned under Advance.

You could also look at upgrading to Pro, think its $99. Then delay all updates and build your own schedule within your calendar to manual go through a process to update.

Don't forget Active Hours in Settings- reset the time period (18 hrs) so it covers the period of interest- no restarts related to updates in that period.

Where possible use programs that automatically save the document you are working on periodically. (Typical example- office programs). Then if you forget to save your work and close the program, you lost only a little at most if there's an unexpected shut down.

Pro can be set to Notify you of an update, so you can deal with it when you want to.

What version of Firefox are you on. Would have thought it to would have opened back where you were. As I said Chrome did. I know this is like talking about religion, which we can't, but give LibreOffice a go. Wouldn't be surprised at all to see that it saved work.
