    Logoff, logon, shutdown, restart and startup sounds are so 90s!

    Themes can actually set the logon and logoff sounds, but the default sound scheme which is what we were referring to in this thread does not have those options.

    Found this online: Change Windows Startup and Shutdown Sounds but was not successful in W10. I had that working a while age but had to do clean installation of 10130 and since then was not able to replicate.

    If you want to change the Windows 10 startup sound, make a copy of C:\windows\system32\imageres.dll, then open the original using Resource Hacker. The startup sound is located under "WAVE", replace that resource with the desired startup sound in WAV format, and save it.

    It's already there, default sound from W7. Problem is that registry hack to enable startup sound disappears after reboot.

    You said:
    There are no longer sounds for these events in Windows 8, 8.1, and 10. If you want, you can enable the Windows 7 style startup sound by searching up "Change system sounds" in the Start menu, clicking the first result, then checking the "Play Windows Startup sound" box and clicking OK.
    I did that but sounds don't play.

    You can go into C:\Windows\Resources\Themes and open the themes with notepad. Scroll down to the bottom and you will find

    Code:
    [Sounds]
    ; IDS_SCHEME_DEFAULT
    SchemeName=@%SystemRoot%\System32\mmres.dll,-800
    I haven't tried it myself but I imagine the mmres.dll is the file to modify?

    How do I modify this file?
