Computer Reboots after Sleep or Left Alone for 15 Minutes

For the past month or so I have this recurring problem:
after the computer is left alone turned on for about 15 minutes, it goes to sleep, or something like that. And when I try to wake it up pressing the power button it REBOOTS (instead of waking up, or at least waking up from hibernation).

    Help !

Details: 64bit Win 10, Lenovo ThinkPad.

    =====

    Notes:
    1) I have already turned off the "Fast Startup" option. But the problem persists.
    2) I put go to sleep after 10 minutes when plugged-in before. Now I'm trying to change it to do nothing.

    Hi GarySt

Might start with resetting your power plan defaults. Right click Start > Power Options > Additional power options (on right) > Change Plan settings (for active plan) > Restore default settings for this plan.

Are you on Windows 10 V1803? (Windows Key + R, type winver, enter). What is your version, build?

If so when was 1803 installed (Start > Settings > Update & security > view update history)

Does this coincide with when the problem started?

Could you please try turning off hibernation

    To command prompt(admin) or Powershell(admin)

    powercfg -h off

To reverse same command but with the word on instead of off. With hibernation off does the power button react differently?

My Win 10 build is 1607. Should I upgrade? How?

Yes you should upgrade. That version is not supported any more.

Strange that it has not upgrade on its own.

Have you done anything to defeat Feature updates (1703, 1709, 1803)?

Could be something as simple as setting network connection to metered.

Have you tried checking for updates Start > Settings > Update and Security > Check for updates

This tutorial will walk you through an upgrade process that I would recommend. It is called an inplace repair / upgrade. Your case it would upgrade.

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

This will take you to V1803, the latest. Please be advised. V1803 has gotten bad press in some quarters, millions are running with no issue. I run it on on my daily.

BEFORE doing this I would recommend you do two things. Might seem like overkill, I like to be ready.

    1) Do a complete backup of your data off machine.

    2) Use Macrium Reflect to create an Image that will allow you to restore your machine to its current state.

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

Don't skip the skips in the tutorial where you create and test boot media. It is true that if you do a complete Image of your system you will in essence being backing data up twice. I like the simple data backup as it is usually very easy to work with.

As expected, I enabled MS update. Unfortunately MS immediately seized the opportunity started the download and update. This of course failed with the code: Oxc190020e. I tried to cancel it, but instead pressed by mistake try again and now the whole thing still is going on for hours

When the update completes it may display an error message and an error code.
The error codes are similar but different when using the update assistant and a Windows 10 iso.
The Windows 10 iso typically posts a longer error code that has more information when troubleshooting.

Rebooting in the middle of a Windows upgrade can cause problems with the boot or operating system/registry corruption.

If the upgrade fails and you are back on the desktop please perform the following steps:

    1) Run the BETA log collector:
BSOD - Posting Instructions - Windows 10 Forums
The beta log collector is the link on the bottom of the above web page.
It will collect msinfo32, dxdiag, drivers, hosts, partitions, GPU, BIOS, install, dumps, event viewer log files, etc. and place the logs on the desktop.
Use extract > open to run the beta log collector and place a zip into the thread.
Use the text and images in this link in case there are problems running the beta log collector:
DM Log tool problem Solved - Windows 10 Forums
The logs may be useful in evaluating/troubleshooting the unexplained rebooting.

For troubleshooting the failure to upgrade the Panther logs can be scanned.
    2) Download and install: Everything
    voidtools
    3) Use this software to find these files.
    4) For any files that are found use 7zip to organize the files and post a one drive or drop box share link into the thread.
    C:\Windows\Panther
    setuperr.log
    setupact.log
    Setupmem.dmp
    setupapi.dev.log
    BlueBox.log
    Event logs (*.evtx)
    C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Rollback
    $Windows.~bt\Sources\Rollback\setupmem.dmp
    $Windows.~bt\Sources\Rollback\setupapi\setupapi.dev.log
    $Windows.~bt\Sources\Rollback*.evtx
    $Windows.~BT\Sources\Panther\UnattendGC
    miglog.xml
    Windows\Logs\Mosetup
    Setupapi.offline.log

    5) Open disk management and post an image into the thread:
Disk Management - How to Post a Screenshot of | Windows 10 Tutorials
(Please make sure that the columns are expanded so that all characters in the rows are visible and that nothing is cut off before posting)

    6) Download and install Minitool partition wizard and post an image into the thread:
MiniTool Partition Wizard Free Edition - Free download and software reviews - CNET Download.com

    7) On some computers Windows updates finds problems and cannot upgrade. It will continue to make attempts to upgrade. What steps had you made to prevent Windows from making repeated attempts to upgrade?

Thanks. I already know the problem: it is lack of free space.
The computer thus retained the same MS Win 10 build, i.e., 1607.

Never mind, I think I will stick with this build for now. It is very good and everything is working fine. Why upgrade and destabilize the system for no reason?

Myself I want a support system, especially in this world of bugs, hacks and ransomware.

Of course this is your machine and you get final call. So back to power issue.

Did you shut off hibernation with the command I provided? Any change?

If you look in "View update history" under windows updates can you identify something that was installed about the time the issue started?

In particular, near the bottom, any drivers that were updated?

Thanks Ken. I did disable hibernate. As of now the power off problem seems fine. I will wait to see if indeed things are okay now for a couple of days. Thanks for now!!
