Hello, I apologize if you've mentioned doing anything similar to this in your post already; I skimmed through your post.

Go to the Task Manager -> Startup Tab -> Disable Microsoft Edge -> Delete the MS Edge Desktop icon (if another one is on the Desktop now) -> Restart the computer
(Does this make the Desktop icon not get created?)

How to Disable auto Shortcut Creation-image.png

    I use Google Chrome.
The other day, the Edge icon got created on my Desktop. I deleted the icon (since I don't use that browser), and wanted to uninstall Edge, since I automatically assumed that it got installed from some Windows Update. To my surprise, it's almost impossible to uninstall Edge now-a-days from Windows 10. So I decided to Disable it in the Task Manager, and there seems not to be any trace of that application starting up, or interfering, when my computer starts up, which is what I really need. I don't mind if it's installed on the computer, I just don't want it running in the background.

Thank you for your rapid reply. I Did forget to mention that I had done that already. With everything else that I have done, Microsoft Edge no longer appears in the Task Manager. I recently updated my post to say that I also deleted Microsoft Edge Update in the task scheduler also. I'll probably be able to tell if the shortcut re-appears tomorrow. I (like you) hope this frees up some resources. I am also hoping that the changes that I have made don't cause any adverse unforeseen problems.

    You're welcome =)
I'm sure everything will be okay with your computer. We can just wait and see what happens the next time you restart the computer, to see if the icon stops re-creating itself. I hope it all works out well on your end.

Please post back soon on if your configurations worked out well the next time you get to see what the result is, once you restart the computer. =)

    Thanks,
Will do. I'll try to post an update tomorrow afternoon.

    Er.... Just so you know,

To delete the Microsoft Edge Updates in the task scheduler I:
    1. Typed Run in the search box
    2. I typed taskschd.msc in the run box
    3. I clicked on "Task Scheduler Library on the left
    4. I looked for any Microsoft Edge entries to the right.
    5. I deleted those entries one by one.

I did this to see if there were tasks in the library, make sure that the changes that I made were not reversed by a pending task and to free up resources. I forgot to copy and paste the entries to a saved archive, on the (remote) chance that I wish to restore functionality back to Edge. I can probably research these entries to restore them, but I'm hoping that if I restore functionality back, they will be recreated by the system.

If what I did works, I hope this helps someone, and they don't forget to archive the entries before deleting them.

Oh, Omg, I'm so glad you mentioned that! So I'm assuming you're talking about those two entries:

How to Disable auto Shortcut Creation-image.png

I've completely forgotten about them, since I Disabled them a long time ago.

But this is very important for you to be aware of, and always remember this. This applies to everyone else who comes across this:
Let's suppose there's an entry in pretty much any applet / program / etc, or something.

There is a HUGE IMPORTANT difference between "Deleting" and "Disabling" something.
I want you to do your best to always remember this. It will help you so much in the future.

So in this scenario, notice how I have Disabled those two entries above? When I disable something, and Windows decides to do updates which have something to do with those entries, then Windows (assuming certain commands are programmed correctly by programmers), would notice that you have entries Disabled, and would completely ignore modifying those entries or whatnot.

    BUT!!!
Assuming that you Delete those entries, then Windows will notice that those entries do NOT exist, and would install those entries again, and set the DEFAULT settings for them. The Default setting for those entries is for them to be Enabled!!!

BIG BIG thing you must always keep in mind.
You're right that deleting them makes things look more neater and less cluttered, yet if you delete certain things, and Windows does a little "check" to make sure those things exist, and notices that they don't exist... then Windows will REINSTALL those things, and way more than likely will enable these things which were originally enabled in the first place.

I apologize for how long this post has become, but this is a very important thing for everyone to be aware of!

If you want something to "not run", you need to DISABLE that certain thing, and NOT DELETE that certain thing.

So back to the sentence right below the picture:
"I've completely forgotten about them, since I Disabled them a long time ago."

Assuming that I deleted those two items, then they would have gotten re-created, and gotten Enabled, by default.

I hope you followed along with the whole point of my post here. =)

PS: I want you to notice the Nvidia entries in that picture as well! Notice how I have them disabled? They tend to stay Disabled even after I update the Nvidia drivers.
The reason why I have them disabled is because they are not required to be running, AND I like keeping such a minimal amount of stuff to be running on the computer. I like my computer to be efficient, and as quick as possible. There is no reason for so much stuff to be open in the background.

PS PS: Regarding your edited post right above this one... Try to check for updates in Windows Update, and hopefully Windows would re-list those items you deleted, because after you read my long post: What is the best method to do for MS Edge entries?
    Delete or Disable?

I'll let the color coding be a hint for the answer to that question =)

PS PS PS... the last one, I promise =þ
It just came across my mind. It is probably best to Disable Microsoft Edge instead of Removing it. Because if you Disable it from running, then Windows will notice that MS Edge is already installed, and won't bother to try to do anything to it (which keeps it disabled). Yet if you remove it, then Windows will notice that it doesn't exist, and will try to install it again, and of course, set its default settings which are of course... to try to make itself the main browser.

Hope this REALLY LONG post was informative.

Morning has broken, and still no Edge shortcut, but time will still tell. There was no rhyme or reason when it would show up.

Microsoft edge keeps putting a shortcut on my desktop. I keep removing it, and it just keeps coming back.
I just awoke to a new Edge desktop shortcut.

    I found this Ghacks post:

Prevent Microsoft Edge from creating Windows desktop shortcuts

Basically it about simply creating this Registry Entry:

    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\EdgeUpdate]
    "CreateDesktopShortcutDefault"=dword:00000000

There's also this other thread from 4 days ago:

Stopping the Edge Shortcut on Update. . . Possibly

I hope your solution will remain working for you =)

If you do want to analyze why the shortcut got created, you can probably go into the Event Viewer, and see what your computer did which brought back the Edge icon on the Desktop. But there's gonna be a LOT of logs in there from then 'til now. So it will be a little difficult to analyze that at this moment. But let's say worst case scenario, it gets recreated again, and you notice it immediately after it gets created. You open the Event Viewer immediately and look at the recent logs in there. Then you can find info.

Hmh... guess what I just noticed...

How to Disable auto Shortcut Creation-image.png

I wanted to analyze this more. Right click -> Properties -> General

How to Disable auto Shortcut Creation-image.png

So I went to Event Viewer, and the only thing I found that's relevant at that exact time is:

How to Disable auto Shortcut Creation-image.png

Went to Services, and Disabled that, with the other Edge entries.
Microsoft added this little annoyance. That's annoying. Good luck to the other millions of people who are gonna get annoyed from this, without knowing about TenForums...

Microsoft decided to do this together with each Edge update.
This Updates are installed hidden but throwing the icon on the desktop.
It's a new feature to push the users for using Edge.

You're right. This is pretty brand new. I've noticed this Desktop shortcut getting created just a few days ago. I deleted the icon every time, hoping that someone at Microsoft will decide to do something that doesn't make the shortcut exist on the Desktop every time. But I guess not.

So yes, I agree with the idea that if I want someone to use something that I made, I'd shove it in their face... but also. Bad for business. Some people are gonna get very annoyed from it. "Hey let's use a different operating system." Then there's the people with 2 and a half million items on their Desktop, who won't even notice this shortcut exists. This shortcut will be hiding behind 10 thousand other icons that somehow are all sitting together in the same spot on the Desktop.

Microsoft messed up. It's their fault. They had way more money than Google ever did in the past, and Microsoft could've hired ONLY:
    • Graduates
    • from American Universities
    • who have studied "conceptual" subjects, such as Mathematics, Science, Physics, ... Business, Economics, Finances.
    But no...
Tell you what Microsoft: If you make a time machine to go back into the past, then I will guarantee that you would've probably became trillionaires by now, with at least 98% of all the people in the United States using your products only, if you hired people who fit in the categories from above.
